Default EBMM EVH ... How does this happen?

The purple stain on this body looks great.
But what's up with the headstock?

I've never seen anything like it.
I'm thinking maybe this one was refinished, but whoever did it didn't want to alter the original decals ... I dunno.

The Purple MMEVH's are pretty renound for this.......it doesn't look so bad when it happens on the headstock and body (I think it actually looks far cooler as the maple just looks stunning).

My mate had one and was told it was due to being in direct light etc......I'm not sure about that as many of the purpe ones seem to do this....
Ed: Actually, the last record I bought was by a band called Brand X
Al: I make my living by viciously attacking something
    Mike: ...actually I don't drink.
    Sammy: Are these yours Eddie?

The fading doesn't surprise me ... I've seen it before, I understand why it happens, blah, blah, blah.
What puzzles me is how a body can remain in such good shape while the headstock fades to natural?

If they had it in a room that gets alot of sunlight via a window, but only the headstock gets hit with the sun rays, then it would do that!

....or the owner has been driving around with it in a car with the headstock out the window......

My guess: The body was finished at the point they finally figured out the proper UV protection, but the neck headstock had been stained and clear coated with the former process. The were just a mis-match in that sense.

I like this about EB guitars--they date everything. The neck and body for my Axis were made two months apart from one another. I know this because both are dated.

I'm telling you, boys, I'm digging the uniqueness of this guitar...definitely going to have to watch this one over the next week.

Some of the VERY early EBMM prototypes had natural headstocks/dyed bodies (some even had painted black headstocks)...I have some photos (somewhere) of these.

There are only two guitars on my "will ALWAYS lust for" list:

A natural EBMM - I may have to sell a kidney someday to get one, but they are out there, they are attainable.

A tobacco burst EBMM w/natural headstock - I know there is at least ONE in existence, I have a picture of Ed holding one. However, short of me building one for myself, I don't know HOW my hands would ever get around one.

...hey now, THAT gives me an idea...

Or you have them in a case like mine. I know the window is right there, but that one is facing north, so NO direct sunlight and none have faded. (even though I have only 3 of them left from that time)

Something else to consider if buying this is the neck may have been swithced out with another purple one. There are some guys that were doing that to pair the best birds eye neck with the best figured body to get top dollar . My point is this neck could of come from another guitar completly faded like the neck. The only way to know for sure is check the neck date and body date. I have alot of past experience in buying these and my advice would be to see if the owner is willing to show the dates. If it does not matter to you then so be it. For a player it does not matter anyway.

Light really had nothing to do with it. It was the way some of the dyes were mixed, that caused some of the colors react with natural chemicals in the wood over time. The dyes were mixed in small batches and used until they used up the color, then another batch would be made.
In some cases the dye faded completely and in some others it just lightened or changed to a different color. In canned dyes you buy off the shelf you usually won't find this problem because they're stablized but EBMM had their own method of creating and mixing dyes and it didn't always work.
It happened because the wood wasn't properly sealed first. Instead the dyes were rubbed into the wood first to bring out a more intense grain pattern and then sealed. Looks nice but you can see it has it's drawbacks in some cases.

The only ones you'll see with Natural or Black headstocks are Ed's. None of the production ones for the general public had this.

The Blue EVHs were the same with fading ! most of them fade to a sot of aqua colour, which some folk think is a green !! Here is a pic of my 2 Blue EVHs, one of which has faded a bit more than the other , both are Blue though !!

There are a couple of Naturals in the background, with natural headstocks!
