Default Quitting Weed Just As Hard As Quitting Tobacco

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking grass:

    http://www.livescience.com/healthday/612108.html

Okay, I know I'm only into the second week of Marine Science but I would point out a flaw in the study:

This study included six men and six women (median age 28.2) who used marijuana at least 25 days a month and smoked at least 10 tobacco cigarettes a day. For the first week, they continued their normal use of both substances. For the remaining five weeks of the study, they were randomly chosen to refrain from using either cigarettes, marijuana or both substances for five-day periods, separated by nine-day periods of normal use. Urine tests were used to monitor abstinence.
Okay, that's 12 people...A serious study needs at least 1000 people before you can draw any conclusions.

I believe it. Cigarettes for me aren't about the physical addiction. That I can control. It's the psychological addiction. Certain activities just don't seem right without a cigarette.

Why would it be any different with pot?

Umm, from a personal standpoint I disagree. I don't feel remotely as attached to dope as to nicotine.

I smoked cigs for about 10 years and quit cold turkey when someone close to me died of lung cancer. A few years later after high school I tried to start smoking, (worked 3rd shift and needed something to do besides get robbed) and couldn't stand them. Now I also was a 3-4 joint a day smoker for about 8 years and was also able to quit cold turkey. I still had cravings for it but it was getting pretty expensive and I have children. For me personally I have a hard time being addicted to something. Ok accept sex and drinking.
I used to jog but the ice cubes kept falling out of my glass.

For me, the only time I really want to smoke a Marlboro is when I've been smoking the green stuff, which is almost every day. When I'm not on the herb, I really have no desire to smoke. I've tried to quit smoking cigs, but I just can't seem to put down the weed. The two go together for me and that's a big problem. Like someone said earlier in this thread, there are just certain things that require a cigarette and getting stoned is one of them in my opinion.

Marijuana Smokers Face Rapid Lung Destruction ---
---As Much As 20 Years Ahead Of Tobacco Smokers.

ScienceDaily (Jan. 27, 2008) ó A new study finds that the development of bullous lung disease occurs in marijuana smokers approximately 20 years earlier than tobacco smokers.

A condition often caused by exposure to toxic chemicals or long-term exposure to tobacco smoke, bullous lung disease (also known as bullae) is a condition where air trapped in the lungs causes obstruction to breathing and eventual destruction of the lungs.

At present, about 10% of young adults and 1% of the adult population smoke marijuana regularly. Researchers find that the mean age of marijuana-smoking patients with lung problems was 41, as opposed to the average age of 65 years for tobacco-smoking patients.

The study "Bullous Lung Disease due to Marijuana" also finds that the bullous lung disease can easily go undetected as patients suffering from the disease may show normal chest X-rays and lung functions. High-resolution CT scans revealed severe asymmetrical, variably sized bullae in the patients studied. However, chest X-rays and lung functions were normal in half of them.

Lead author Dr. Matthew Naughton says, "What is outstanding about this study is the relatively young ages of the lung disease patients, as well as the lack of abnormality on chest X-rays and lung functions in nearly half of the patients we tested."

He added, "Marijuana is inhaled as extremely hot fumes to the peak inspiration and held for as long as possible before slow exhalation. This predisposes to greater damage to the lungs and makes marijuana smokers are more prone to bullous disease as compared to cigarette smokers."

Patients who smoke marijuana inhale more and hold their breath four times longer than cigarette smokers. It is the breathing manoeuvres of marijuana smokers that serve to increase the concentration and pulmonary deposition of inhaled particulate matter Ė resulting in greater and more rapid lung destruction.

This paper is published in the January 2008 issue of Respirology.
