Default AMC and the joy of old movies.

Anyone else ever have the wonderful experience of stumbling across an old movie and just enjoying the hell out of it? It's happened a few times in my life, and I always remember those movies and days as something special.

The first time it happened I was just a child and the Democratic National Convention was taking place. Well, this was before cable and our truly local channels would offer up *Convention Week Movies* because they knew most common folks didn't want to watch this crap all week long. OH, I sould say, the conventions back the were carried on all three major networks, all night long...so you didn't have a lot of choices. Sooo, I, having no interest in The DNC, happened one night onto The Cain Mutiny.....wow, what a great movie, what a great preformance by Bogart. I can still remember what a great job Bogart did with the *quart of strawberries* line and how the whole movie just grabbed me and was so entertaining.

About a year ago, I took a *sick* day from work. Laying around and being lazy I stumbled upon AMC and the movie the Hustler. I figured what the hell, I'm just sitting here half asleep, pissing the day away....and people have always said it's a good one so why not? After two plus hours and at the end of the movie I felt like standing up and applauding!! Paul Newman is the man. I have only seen three of his movies, The Hustler, Nobodys Fool, and Cool Hand Luke....the guy is an American Icon and I plan on seeing every movie he has made.

Today I saw Rio Bravo for the first time. I know, I know, I should send in my man card for not seeing it earlier. John Wayne, what can I say?? Wow. I was totally entertained for the entire movie.

What a great experience to stumble upon a movie that was way beond your time and just enjoy it to no end.....like finding lost treasure.

Anyone else have the same experience or have old movies to recommend??

Whenever they have "The Godfather" airing, it's hard to change the channel.

Rio Bravo is great. Dean Martin is cool as well. Love that little song him and Ricky Nelson do together.

    Archie Bunker

Captain Augustus McCrae in "Lonesome Dove"

    I know, dude - it's sick.

Seems like A&E or Bravo are playing it about every other month, seriously.
Last time I swore I wasn't going to watch it....

here's a Dave vs Sam question....You like I or II better?

Oh man, I've thought long and hard about that...and I gave up. I'm a fan of both eras, the music is too excellent to fight over, in my opinion. We are lucky.

My apologies, I should have known that. I think it's okay to be somewhat absent-minded on the weekends.

The Godfather II was definitely better. Hard to imagine they could surpass the expectations of the first movie.

It's not so easy the third time...

so you're weren't being a smartass? ok, sorry, kid.

can't decide which one I like better.....but we don't have to choose, do we. I have to say, one of the best parts of the whole saga is when, in Godfather II, the film flashes back to when DeNiro (or should I say Vito...) is a struggling young father. Love it when he ambushes that fat SOB in the hallway!

My favorite part was Vito's revenge on Don Cicco (sp?) for killing his mother after his family. DeNiro was perfect!
