    Default Revisiting Van Halen: "RDM3410"

I've got a pretty heavy workday ahead of me but I've decided to sit back while I'm working and revisit something that I have not listened to in a Looooooooooooong time, Van Halen's RDM3410. i listened to this masterpiece from start to finish and it made me think, imagine if this van halen album was never released.

there are so many great songs on this album that defined the van halen sound, and to imagine a van halen career without it is almost unthinkable. perhaps my favourite moment on this album is alex's awesome flute solo in the middle of "Mailman", definitely alex's best minute on tape to date.

anyone else care to discuss what they liked/disliked about this album?

Great lyrics on that one too.

    "I'm hungry for life,
Like a sheep that's lost its meat,
Won't you wear those shoes tonight,
And throw your love to me."

    Still gives me goosebumps.

Look, as much as I laud AVH's percussive abilities, until "Respect The Wind" came out on the "Twister" soundtrack, no-one would have suspected the guy could play keyboards, let alone walk and chew gum at the same time. As a result of this, (and I know I'm in the minority here) I highly doubt Alex played the flute part to the intro of "Mailman". Another clue to this being the part is startlingly similar to the solo played by Walter Parazaider on Chicago's "Color My World". I am convinced to this very day that it is in fact Parazaider, and not Alex Van Halen performing the piece.

Recheck the recording dates...during the five and a half month span that "RDM3410" was recorded (including the week spent in the Netherlands, as well as the weekend in the Congo for the recording of the authentic bird and hyena sounds), Chicago were on hiatus. Being an L.A. resident (and neighbor to the Van Halens), it is believable that he (Parazaider) got the call, as more than likely he would have owned a flute, saving money on the purchase of one.

You guys can praise this piece of crap all you want, but to me, it ain't VH if it ain't got a tuba or cello solo. They need to get back to their roots. Fuck a damn flute. Besides, Richie Sambora already did a similar flute thing on "Slippery When Celtic" years ago. It comes off as a lame, Bon Jovi-copycat thing.

(Ok, the authentic Hyena sounds were cutting edge, I have to admit that.)

We train dogs for cattle and sheep herding. They're very different. Sheep are a lot like supermodels - they bunch together, they rattle very easily. Cattle are like drunks at a hockey game - two will want to fight: "Who are you and what's with your badge?"

Two of them will be like: "Leave them alone, let's go see the game." Another one is lost: "Where'd you guys go?" The dog has to deal with all of that. You work them off a whistle. It's the original video game.

Van Halen reminded us last night of why we loved them in the first place. They helped us to get past all the bullshit around us and remind us to have a little fucking fun in the midst of it all. - Reckless Fable

Slippery when Celtic, now that is funny.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

PER IL TRATTAMENTO DELLA SINDROME METABOLICA UTILE IL TESTOSTERONE

    Farmacia.it - 8 ottobre 2007

im willing to consider that as a possibility despite the flute being officially credited to alex on the album notes. I just don't understand why they would bother crediting it to alex instead of parazaider? A joke perhaps, or did they fear parazaider's performance if credited would shake the already unstable foundations of the Chicago hiatus with no hope of a reformation... similar to Eddie's performance on 'Beat It'?

what are you on about. alex's solo is way cooler than sambora's lame flute thing on 'Slippery When Celtic'. ok, maybe the melody is similar during the major 7th arpeggio but it's a very common and pop-y kinda melody.

    Still gives me goosebumps.
damn, i've always sung that as:
"Don't your wool clothes look tight"

i looked it it up and i've been singing the wrong thing all these years! i should have known because it doesn't make sense at all. i appreciate the meaningful-ness of the lyrics even more now - a very deep and insightful song indeed.
