    Default OJ Mayo Rules Violation

Yeah i know College Hoops does not seem to be a super popular topic here(Looked all over for NCAA Basketball 2007-2008 thread couldn't find one) and it will probably fall all the way down the "Play Ball!" message queue but this story pissed me off so i'm posting it anyway

Mayo may have broken NCAA rule

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Southern California freshman standout O.J. Mayo might have violated an NCAA rule by accepting free tickets to Monday night's NBA game between Denver and the Los Angeles Lakers from Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony.

Mayo told reporters Tuesday he had received the tickets, which were located behind courtside seats near mid-court at Staples Center and had a face value of $230 each.

"We don't know the specifics of the situation and won't be able to comment," NCAA spokesman Erik Christianson said Wednesday in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

USC sports information director Tim Tessalone declined comment on behalf of the university.

NCAA bylaw 16.11.2.2.3 states that student-athletes may not receive "free or reduced-cost admission to professional athletics contests from professional sports organizations, unless such services also are available to the student body in general."

The NCAA could consider Anthony a friend who gave Mayo the tickets rather than a representative of the Nuggets, perhaps making the matter legal by NCAA standards.

Mayo, averaging a team-leading 19.7 points and 4.6 rebounds, said Anthony made the offer of tickets at a party he hosted Sunday night.

"I was talking to him like, `Man, you're out pretty late. You've got a game tomorrow night against Kobe (Bryant),"' Mayo said. "He said, `Nah, it will be all right.' And then he asked, `You want to come to the game?' And I was like, `Sure."'

All right now i played Division I soccer and we took a trip to Germany for a soccer tournament my junior year and we had the awesome honor to watch a bundisliga game Bayern Munich v. Borussia Dortmund....the President of Bayern Munich bought the seats for me and all of my teammates...why weren't we busted for violating NCAA rules (i know NCAA soccer doesnt not even come close to popularity of NCAA basketball but still where is the equity)

Twofold problems with the above story:
    1. NCAA rules are not evenly/consistently administered and therefore are unfairly discriminatory towards similarly situated student athletes & schools...some players/teams violations get swept under the rug while others become catalysts of probation (for schools) & suspention/expultion (for student athletes) I guarantee someone has bought Tyler Hansborough or Roy Hibbert or Levance Fields etc. a plane ticket or a athletic event ticket and they haven't been busted...and what about students in other "less popular sports" who get free shit all the time...our Lacrosse team got free shit all the time from clothes to bus tickets to meals

    2. It WAS A TICKET TO A BASKETBALL GAME!!!!!!! It wasn't like Melo bought Mayo an Escalade...Seriously the dude will be playing against 'Melo next year...If Mayo gets busted for this the NCAA really needs some self evaluation as an organization...i mean its like a cop pulling a guy over for going 57mph in a 55mph zone and letting a guy going 107mph off the hook...NCAA use some fucking judgment you idiots...don't kick this kid out of college hoops b/c of that...and if they do that rule the NBA set forcing kids to play at least 1 year of college hoops should be lifted b/c the NCAA enforcement body is just a farce

This is simply insipid, on several levels. For one thing, the rule states that a player isn't supposed to receive favors that non student athletes would not. Well, who is to say that Carmelo would not have handed the tickets to anybody? The argument that Mayo somehow benefited by his status disappears in a puff of logic.

OK, what if Mayo is ordered to pay the value of the tickets...where is he supposed to get the money from?

Look, it's doubtful the kid will even make it through 4 years of college. He's there to springboard his career to the NBA because the NBA no longer will take in high school kids. So for the NCAA to be so hypocritical in one area yet still maintain such a ("Nudge, Nudge, Wink, Wink") relationship with television broadcasters (and the lucrative rights to those broadcasts) is quite simply: ABSURD.

The college hoops threads don't enjoy a lot of participation; I guess this year no one has really bothered to start one. Besides, I can only pimp UNC hoops so much before I get tired of it myself.

Tyler Hansbrough getting a free run through the Shoney's Breakfast Bar? HAHA!!! Perish the thought of ANY Carolina student-athlete doing anything unethical or unsavory!

    Enjoy the college hoops, gentlemen.

The NCAA should use some discretion in this case. Maybe next time Carmelo Anthony should give some tickets to the debate team or chess club or some other academic club. Would that make the NCAA happy?
