Default The Complete VHIII Howard Stern Appearance 1998 (Parts 1-6)

For what it's worth, Van Halen on the Howard Stern Show in 1998. Oddly enough, I really do not recall the segment being quite this lengthy.

    Van Halen 3 HS Interview 1998 Part 1 (5:13)

    Van Halen 3 HS Interview 1998 Part 2 (4:26)

    Van Halen 3 HS Interview 1998 Part 3 (4:17)

    Van Halen 3 HS Interview 1998 Part 4 (4:42)

    Van Halen 3 HS Interview 1998 Part 5 (4:23)

    Van Halen 3 HS Interview 1998 Part 6 (4:54)

I loved III and gary but ed was realllllly weird. I htink he was nervous that he knew Howard was going to grill him.

God I miss Mikey being in the band.

Man I hear that. The band has lost all personable element, and the fun-loving element is dead.

I think I actually heard this on the radio at the time. Ed is a little out there.

"Going back to Dave would be going backward, no growth" "Having Dave back would be riping off the fans" "We wouldn't make it past one show"

Wow, guess these guys just change their opinions whenever it is convinent and beneficial for them to do so. Not so much for integrity, eh.

    Well, once again........

Mike comes off as the most personable.
Gary isn't allowed to speak more than 30 words total.
Al handles most of the questions/comments.
Ed slowly goes mad. I forgot how weird things got ten years ago.

As for the MTV/Vh1 footage tacked on at the end......I guess the $$$ spoke eventually.

MY God Ed does have some good lines though

"You don't really stutter...or else you'd be singing My Generation all the time..."

So what brings you guys down here?

    "A car..."

Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury...for those of you who believe that the TECHs are all at fault for Ed's sound woes....take a look at this....Ed had one amp to hook up in Howard's studio...and he was on his knees fixing with it...doing god knows what for what seemed like a long time.....maybe it's because Ed over complicates his rig so much...he took 10 minutes to set it up...then he put it down and didn't want to play....kinda fritzy no?

That's like ordering a Big Mac with Supersize fries and drink with a Frosty...and then once you pay and get your tray....your suddenly not hungry....

    couple of points...

Ed really is a lunatic...he reminds me sooooooo much of my old guitar player/songwriting partner...erratic, muttering, walking around all the time, impossible to really understand, always tinkering and fidgeting with everything "getting ready" to play but never actually playing.

Al may have Micheal Keaton beat in the eye brow department.

Howard Stern is, was and always will be a complete tool. I still have a hard time believing anyone really enjoys listening to him and his little sidekick, the chick, bugs the hell out of me too.

I'm writing this as I'm watching the clips...I've made it to part 4 where the dude in the dress comes out...this is such a waste of time...

    part 5...
dave looked like absolute shit back then...
the obligatory dick size and naked jokes...jeez this sucks...

    part 6...
oh jesus...the guy calling in with the massage story...this is so lame!
those final comments I think are spot on...the 1996 Dave was not an option...i think we can all agree that it would not have worked, as is evidenced by the fact that it didn't. Dave seems to be in a much better place, ironically enough, better than Ed right now...hopefully it goes somewhere.

well there is no doubt Ed is on something in this interview...but say what you want about him, one thing you can't say is he isn't generous. Gave Howard his guitar no problem....How many of us wish that were us?

    generous huh?

I knew this junkie that I thought was pretty generous too...he'd show up at the bar so out of his mind that he'd start dumping his pockets out. One night while fumbling around for change at the jukebox he walked up to me and dumped his pockets for me. I walked out of there with 26 dollars, 6 tabs of ecstasy and his chap stick. My friend, that's not generous...that's being out of your mind. You think that guy woke up the next day and thought "man I feel so good knowing that I gave away my cash, my drugs and my chap stick?"

whether he's on something or he's lost his mind can be debated until we're all dead...either way, I think it had more to do with him giving away a guitar than being in the giving spirit! hahahahahahah

by the year 2006, I don't think Ed or AL are worried about "growth." So if those statement were ever brought up to Ed or Al, i'm sure they'd say, in 1996 bringing Dave back would be ripping off the fans becuase there was hope of new music. After another 10 years of nothing, in 2007 bringing Dave back is what the fans actually needed. Plus they've run out of options, unless Ed gets into the instrumental scene.
