    Default Sports Talk radio

I like to listen to sports talk from time to time, especially when they're talking about MLB or the NFL - I could give two shits about college sports - but we just lost a sports talk station here in Orlando, while the reception of the ESPN Radio station can be iffy at times. Sometimes on my MLB Game Day audio when there's a rain delay, I get to hear the local hosts - also sometimes when I'm driving around flipping through the dial I'll pick up stations from far away and listen to their hosts as well.

So what are some of your favourite national sports talkers, and also ones that are specific to your area (or specific to another area that you listen to online)?

We had Hank Goldberg (who some of you may know from ESPN) and he was terrific. Unfortunately, the clueless morons that run WQAM here in South Florida opted not to continue to pay him, so he's gone.

And quite frankly with the current quality of our sports teams, other than the Dolphin's (never-ending) rebuilding process there is little to discuss.

I've been a Drive Time Producer in sports talk radio in Detroit for over 10 years and currently produce The Sports Inferno (Mike Valenti and Terry Foster) at WXYT in Detroit.

Sadly, the economy of radio has led to the firing or salary reduction of many great hosts (locally and nationally) over the past few years. I'm bummed they let Hank go, he's a legend in the industry and well respected.

Hank Goldberg always drove me nuts. Great points and insight, but I thought he was unnecessarily rude to callers sometimes, and it turned me off.

I wake up to Mike and Mike in the morning on ESPN, more for Golic than the other one.

I usually try to avoid local sports talk here. There's only so much Cowboys talk one can take.

I pretty much listen to online sports radio all the time when I'm at work. Mostly hockey, but plenty of NFL as well. Also some Jim Rome.

    99% of it online.

I work at a sportstalk station up here in Portland, ME. We have a local morning show and a local afternoon show. Being from Philly, it did not take long to get sick of the NE sports fan. I have been listening to Sportstalk radio since WIP went all sports in Philly in the late 80s. (probably why my taste in music is stuck with 80s rock). There are a lot of great national guys, and I'll always admire how much they know about all sports and all regions (I like Cowherd, Todd Wright, Rome, Mike and Mike, loved Kornheiser when he was on)...Angelo Cataldi and Howard Eskin on WIP. If you're ever in the Portland area check out 95.5/1440 for pretty good local talk.

Cowherd for a national host. Don't always agree with him, but he's entertaining.

I also listen to Mac Jurko & Harry out of Chicago. I laugh my ass off listening to them.

I've been nothing but impressed with Colin Cowherd since he made the jump to the national level. Consistently funny, topical, engaging, with no fear of throwing out an HSO of his own (that's "Hot Sports Opinion" for all of you who haven't been baptized in the P1 greatness of The Ticket (see below))...and NEVER an off-day...Absolutely love the guy.

The only problem I have with Jim Rome is that sometimes it seems that if he didn't repeat every single statement he makes during the show (along with the required 10 second pregant pause), his three-hour show could be whittled down to about 23 minutes. To me, it just seems that some days it is obvious that the man is mailing it in.

That said, when it comes to in-depth, engaging interviews, there is NONE better than Mr. Rome.

However, hands down the MOST ENGAGING radio show with the PERFECT BLEND of sports, comedy, politics, etc...GUY RADIO, period...is the HARDLINE afternoon drive-time show on The Ticket in the greater Dallas/Fort Worth area. Hell, the entire STATION could be the best in the country.

Check 'em out. They stream on the 'net. Give 'em a couple of weeks to grow on you, because they can be a little "all over the place"...but they WILL grow on you.

I completely understand what you're saying, Wickett. But filter out the rabid fan banter (or move to other parts of the country), and you HAVE to appreciate just how consistently top-notch and cutting edge the TICKET has been for over 15 years.

Hell, even in the middle of nowhere, we've got nothing but rabid Husker fans all over the local sports radio...but even without them, the CONTENT around here sucks.

The Ticket, on the other hand, is sheer AM greatness.

We have 2 sports radio stations in the Seattle area. 850AM is national fox sports, I never listen to it. KJR 950AM is local hosts, I pretty much listen to it all day when I am in my car. KJR goes to ESPN at 11PM to 5AM, I am not in my car then.

I really enjoy the local guys more than the national perspective.
    ((Just My Two Cents))
And thats about what its worth.
