    Default Peavey Wolfgang Info

    Hey guys.

I really hate to start a thread for this (so much that I started one ), but I did some searches and really had no luck. I apologize in advance if this is redundant!!!!!!!!!

I am looking for a Peavey Wolfgang. I have a Special - ordered it new in '99. I can't believe some of the prices for used Specials, but I'm not looking for a Special. I'd consider waiting for the Fender, but I don't know how long that will be and I don't know costs. I'm kind of on a budget, so I want to be careful with how much I spend (I want to spend less than $2,000, and honestly, I'd rather be in the $1,200 - $1,400 range - HOWEVER, I don't really know what is realistic here).

I've heard some general comments about which production runs were best. I've heard some of the quilts are good and bad, same with the flame tops (which is my preference). I need help. I'm needing to know what I should look for in order to buy the best version for the money.

I've heard that there are some production years that are better than others.

Can anyone give me a good overview of what to look for? Also, any help on serial number breakdown (that might indicate year, for example), would REALLY help as well.

Thanks, and once again, sorry for redundancy if this is so.

    Later.

just go to ebay and buy one that is in your budget. More or less the guitar is going to sound the same when you play it no matter if its the 25000 frigin franky replica, or if its the korean ash wolfgang special.

I have a later production of the wolfgang standard, and I have played my friends standard deluxe wolfgang that he bought when they first came out...he has a very low serial number, and they both sound very similar

The new evh wolfgang will most likely list around 2000.

I've owned 6 Wolfgangs, 3 standards and 3 specials, all of different years. My observation is that after about 3 years, the quality started to go a little downhill. It's not like the later models were bad, but you could just notice that they didn't "feel" quite the same. Other small little details I noticed were, for one, the Pat. Pend. model I had looked like the Peavey decal was a thick gold foil type decal. The later models look like the Peavey emblem is painted on.

I never had any problems with the later model stuff, in fact, I loved my Flametop Special. I have to say my two favorite Wolfgangs of the 6 were the Trans Purple standard, and the Black Standard, both of which were Pat. Pend. models. Could just be conincidence, but they felt the best to me.

Production numbers were lower earlier on, thus they had better materials to work with. That being said, I own several Patent Pending Wolfies and they all play excellent (the necks, especially). However, my two BEST players (and lookers) are from the last two years of production. The '99 to '02 range is when they were really cranking them out, so you didn't always get the best piece of birdseye or the most awesome flame top, but they were hardly bad at all.

Coke--you should be able to score a standard flame top for $1,200 roughly. Prices are still all over the place on eBay, but the good deals are still there. I still check for Wolfgangs once or twice a day, and I'd be happy to advise you along the way. I know how to assess quality from photos and descriptions, what to ask the sellers about, and I'm good with placing serial numbers with eras. So feel free to shoot questions my way.

    .

Thanks for all the info guys. Thanks for the offer too, Andrew. Honestly, I think I will take you up on your offer. Funny thing about the above quote, I damn near put your name in the title of this thread subject (i.e. Andrew - HELP!!!!!!).

I'll probably post other questions soon. Right now from what I'm seeing on ebay (which is primarily where I'm looking), you are right Andrew, they are all over the place.

I'll be in touch and THANKS AGAIN!!!!

I just did a scan on the Bay, and there isn't much in the way of flame top Standards. The ones that are listed are pretty high in price. There were several up a couple of weeks ago that ended stupidly low.

Yeah there are deals to find on ebay. One week one will go for $1100 and the next an identical one will go for $2000. Just be patient.

The reason why I don't want a first year quilt--I buy guitars to play them.

Heres my 2 cents on the wolfgang quest of this post. The way to start is pick your colour pref, then go looking. There are some brilliant purple ones around right now that are NOS = new old stock, and I just saw a seafoam same thing almost hit the buy it now but I bought 3 Wolfs last week, my wife would kill me LOL! heres a good place to look www.gbase.com
