    Tragic "accident" becomes more tragic...

    Seven Days Ago

Woman, 2 Children Killed On Highway

LOWELL, Mass. -- A woman and two young children were killed Friday night in an horrific accident on Route 495 in Lowell.

Marcelle Thibault, 39, of Bellingham, Mass., was driving in the wrong direction on the highway when she drove her 2003 Lincoln on to the grassy shoulder of the road, state police said. Thibault was traveling southbound in the northbound section of the road.

Thibault then got out of the car with the 4-year-old boy and 5-year-old girl who were traveling with her. The children were Thibault's niece and nephew.

Thibault and the two children walked out into the middle of the road, police said, where they were hit by two cars. All three were taken to hospitals and pronounced dead.

The first car driven by Jennifer Jolly, 47, of Lowell, hit the three in the right or middle lane. A second car driven by James Scammon, 43, of Portsmouth, N.H., then hit them in the left lane, state police said.

    AND NOW TODAY...

In an unusual twist to a heartbreaking case, the Middlesex district attorney's office announced today that a woman and two children who were struck by cars on Interstate 495 in Lowell a week ago were not killed by accident. It was a case of murder and suicide instead.

The woman killed the two children -- her niece and nephew -- and herself by walking into the highway traffic with them. Mental illness was to blame, prosecutors said.

At about 9 p.m., Thibault stopped her car on the grass off the right side of Interstate 495 in Lowell. She and the two children exited the vehicle.

After removing her clothes and the clothes of the two children, Thibault took the children in her arms and brought them into the highway where all three were struck by two cars, prosecutors said.

Thibault had a brief history of mental illness and had undergone some treatment, District Attorney Gerry Leone said in an afternoon news conference.

"This is now about grief and recovery, moving forward," he said, offering his condolences to the family.

A statement from the Lambert and Thibault families released by prosecutors said it was "a time of terrible tragedy" for the families.

"We love, Marci, Kaleigh, and Shane and we miss them very much. We ask everyone to join us in prayer for their souls, and to help us get through this most difficult period of our lives."

I agree. We have no one but ourselves to blame for the fact that incidents like this are considered newsworthy by the media.

it's not what the world is coming to...it's what the world has always been...the only difference is now we have the web and 24 hour news channels that report every possible thing to the entire country...i'm sure that bitch on CNN...Nancy Grace I think her name is will devote at least a weeks' worth of shows to this...

Exactly, and therein lies the problem. There is a market for it, so they exploit it.

Why was a woman with a mental illness allowed to watch these two poor kids?

    How sad.

I live in the area as well and have been following this. I still do not know why one sister would allow "the crazy one" to take her very young children in a car??

Very sad all around. My heart goes out to everyone touched by this tradegy. I especially pray for the drivers who hit these people, as this is something that could very well traumatize them for the rest of their lives.

Imagine you are just driving along (on that peice of highway, probably going 65-75 mph) and then all of the sudden...WTF!... horrible.
