    Default The Mars Volta Thread

Wow...surprised I couldn't find a thread already devoted to these guys.

Did anyone catch them on Letterman last night?

As far as I'm concerned they are the most challenging and ambitious band of the past 20 years. They're in Pink Floyd/Led Zeppelin territory.

I'm fascinated with their lack of boundaries, they're obsession with going any and everywhere without regard for anyone's reaction or opinion. That's true art.

They are in a very very elite group of contemporary groups that are actually putting out bold, powerful and creative music...Radiohead is about the only other group I can think of at the moment. The rest of the bands all seem to be several years their seniors.

Anyway, it's time we had a thread for these guys.

Cause I've never heard of them before...

some people hate them...their music is very esoteric and erratic. The two main guys came out of a band called At the Drive In. The Mars Volta basically centers around those two guys and they having a stable of musicians they bring in. Right now the touring group is about 7 guys I think. On record they bring in some of the finest musicians in the world. They blend latin and english music seamlessly...very ambitious guys. Their first three records were all heady concept albums with no real "singles" and not even breaks in the music...just straight through. Lots of ambient noise...I guess if you took zappa, zep, pink floyd, a good cumbia band, and cuban orchestra, some heroin and LSD and you might end up with the Mars Volta...

They are alright, but something I can not listen to every day. I bought their last album, Frances the Mute, right? And it was like almost exhausting to listen to, like running a marathon or something of that nature. However, very interesting stuff though, just a little much for my personal tastes. Nonetheless, did I hear that on their new stuff are they actually maybe scaled down to actual song structures?? Which I think if they had some of that they would sell better and maybe widen their fanbase. I mean, hey, if they want to go kibitzo a little nothing wrong with it really, just some normalcy tossed in may make it more accessible. Of course, back to the ole argument of should an artist sacrifice their art for commerce.

I bring them up once in a while, but I understand their lack of appeal
to a broad audience. An acquired taste, but then I've always had an
adventurous palate. That said, their best record - Deloused - was in
large part b/c Rick Rubin was able to contain their crazy somewhat to
classic results. I love and appreciate them, but even I'd like to see them
dial it back a bit. 19 minute songs can be tough on anyone.

I agree, listening to their music can be very exhausting...the marathon analogy works well. Sometimes listening to it hurts the heat and mind...hahahaha...but that is precisely what I appreciate it about them. I understand their newest record is not a concept album like Frances or Comatorium and actually involves individual songs. I'm interested to hear what it sounds like.

    Default Upon further review...

I take it all back. Just got The Bedlam in Goliath and the 19+ minute Metatron
is a highlite among another superlative effort. Ilyena another. This + new Sigur
Ros & Radiohead means all my favorite bands are making good new
music and I can quit complaining any time. Hold yer breath.

Lol. Like I said, they don't get much love around here and I usually end up
commenting back to myself, but holy hell, what an album. If you're a fan at
all get The Bedlam in Goliath. They almost dare you to listen to
them, but when you penetrate the noise cloud their ensemble kicks up, you
discover the most amazing shit that puts them leagues beyond any of their
contemporaries. Like an ethnic Led Zep dipped in chemical goo that rolls
around destroying and absorbing everything in its wake. Hyperkinetic
polyrythms, organic inter-genre cross-pollinating, textural overload - their
embarassment of ideas sometimes confounds them, but more often than
not, it sounds like 21st century retro-futurism as imagined by your 20th
century self. Definitely from another planet. Merely rhythmically light years
ahead of the pack and the baddest drummer in the game right now.
    Immediately get your hands on:

    Agadez
    Cavalettas
    Ouroboros
    Ilyena
    Aberinkula

and if you make it through those a few times you're brave enough to
try to penetrate the rest. Best record of the year!
