Another Michael Angelo!.....Batio that is....I hate that guy....

I wanna see Slash or Zakk kick that kids off his little stand and start wailing away on ONE guitar...

I hate seeing stuff like this....cause then all my non-guitar player friends will say to me...hey did you you see that kid on YouTube playing 2 guitars....IT WAS AMAZING......no it wasn't....

This is just novelty guitar playing....it has no meaningful purpose...just like Michael Angelo Batio's blazing speed...there is no purpose to it....

Well that's my bitter post for the day...glad I got it outta the way.....back to the 2007 Forum where everybody is bitter so nobody will notice me

umm...so yeah, the kid's got some talent, and he's probably worked pretty hard to get that technique down, BUT:

He's pretty much just using basic piano techniques in his playing, right? Left hand playing the chordal/rhythmic patterns with the right hand playing the melody/solo parts.

Now, there's NO WAY I could do anything like that, but I don't really see anything innovative about what he's doing.

Give just about any good, classically-trained piano player a month or two to learn their way around the guitar, they'd be able to do the same thing...and not just with cartoon/video game themes...

Yeah, being a keyboard player myself I latched on immediately to what he was doing, and yes it is somewhat derivative. Yet... the kid obviously worked his ass off to accomplish the technique, and more importantly it is damned entertaining.

And I do not see anyone slamming Stanley Jordan for doing essentially the same thing with one guitar. Indeed, it is a novelty. But there is nothing wrong in applauding his effort, nor giving some credit where it is due for his performance.

Revolutionary technique? Hardly. Refreshingly cool to witness and inspiring to listen to? Most definitely.

I just came in here to post this Michael Angelo Batio double-guitar video:

I had to open for him once. It's a little stressful playing guitar to a room full of guitarists, knowing that Michael Angelo is on right after you.

I got to talk to him a bit and he's very nice. The cool thing about him is that he's got no ego at all about being a great artist or a rock star. It's just pure hardcore guitar porn and he knows it. So I'm a fan.

alright...well I watched the entire video.

    Three things came to mind...

    1. Spinal Tap
    2. Those guys that show up on Ripley's or whatever and they dribble 20 basketballs at once...you know...he'll have them spinning on his knees, hands, head, nose, chin, toes etc...
    3. Are those rear view mirrors at the nut of each neck?

Those are little string mutes that you can flip down over the strings so you don't get extra noise when you're doing tapping stuff.

They are called "String Dampeners", and the dude sells them online: http://www.angelo.com/html/the_mab_string_dampener.html

It's pretty much a loose capo with a dish towel wrapped around it for $90.

I first heard of them from Jennifer Batten. Also Stanley Jordan uses them sometimes. I think even Joe Satriani has one.

Zack Kim could also benefit from them if he wanted to. Basically, any time you're only using one hand and sounding the notes by whacking your finger down on the string real hard (like Zack is doing), the other strings can start vibrating and making unwanted noise. So you need something to dampen them.

    Spinal Tap hairstyle, for sure.
I'm thinking, wouldn't it be possible to top that by playing 3 guitars, using one's toes? The foot would handle the bass pedals... on the E string.

Just to finish up this hijack. Metal Sludge once asked Michael Angelo if he was wearing a hairpiece and he gave a great quote:

"My hair is 100% my own, and I have the receipt to prove it!"

Here's Jennifer Batten, in case anyone's interested. With lots of scary bees and scarier hair.
