A couple of awesome vids of the criminally underrappreciated Rufus "speedy" Jones, one of my all time favs. The first video, especially, is a perfect example of his incredible cross sticking and double stroke rolls with unparalleled stick height. To generate the speed he could, with the sticks often times going eye level or even above his head, was mind boggling.

One of the greatest drummers ever, played for both Count Basie and Duke Ellington. A damn shame he developed debilitating arthritis and died at only a month shy of 54, working as a bathroom attendant in obscurity in Vegas.

Louie Bellson in 1969, at 45 yrs old and in his prime. He's probably the greatest there's ever been at playing the brushes. Always loved the arrangement of his long solos.

I saw a interview with Jimmy Page after he became famous but was still young. The interviewer said is there anything you fear? His answer was quick, loud, and one word........ARTHRITIS

Louie Bellson at around 60, still AMAZING. Love it when he plays with multiple sticks in each hand.

The one and only Buddy Rich. There are so many for me to choose from but this may very well be my all time favorite Buddy solo. And, incredibly, he was around 53 yrs old here. Just watching his left hand syncopation alone is fascinating. When he hits the overhead mic at :38 it always makes me laugh.

    UNREAL.

His maneuver from 3:10-3:18 was always one of my favs.

His hi hat play from about 4:25-5:00 is no less astounding. Especially the first 10 seconds or so, where he's holding the hats with his left hand, but still striking the bottom hat with his left stick.

Everything he did he made look effortless and a look on his face like he didn't have a care in the world.

Ah, got my newest snare today! The Pork Pie Percussion "Bob" Big Black Brass. Lol, the cheaper version of the Ludwig Black Beauty. I'd rather spend $300 instead of $700 lol. It's my third Pork Pie snare now, and I love my other two. Just need to put a Coated Emperor X batter head and 42 strand snare wires on it, tune it up, and it'll be ready to go.
