    Default Effects Pedals

I am a home player only but I have some much fun noodling around and I really would like to become a more accomplished player and of course try and capture similar tones of Ed. I have just a plain home amp and a Boss super chorus pedal (which I love and totally overuse...) and a flanger. I run both of these effects dirty since I don't have a distortion pedal. I am looking for suggestions from you accomplished guitarists out there on how to build my effects. I would like to buy an amp and cabinet one day but not until I get more accomplished. I looked at a Line 6 floor POD plus but I am not sure if i would even use half of the settings. I welcome all your ideas. Thanks!!

Oh, and you're going to get them! (Guitarists eager to talk about and suggest gear?? Never! )

There's no reason to go crazy now. Try lots of pedals and buy what you like--not what someone tells you you should like. It sounds like you want to find some kind of a distortion pedal right now. There's a million of them out there. You can never go wrong with Boss stuff, and MXR was one of Eddie's favorite brands. Try 'em out!

I suppose it depends on the tone your going after. My rig is so ridiculous because, over the years, I've sought as much variation as possible. For basic "rock" set up with a practice amp, I'd recommend getting a decent distorition pedal and perhaps a delay or reverb pedal. I'm a bit "old school" when it comes to distortion and always fall back on my old Rat distortion pedal or MXR distortion + but I've messed with some newer ones that are decent. One of the more highly regarded distortion/overdrive pedals is the old Ibanez Tube Screamer which was reissued. There are a few copies I've seen but can't attest to their quality. As for a delay or reverb pedals, I have a Boss DD3 delay pedal and a RV5 Reverb pedal that both work great and are pretty inexpensive.

    Good luck.

a lot of the multi-effects processors pack so many options and parameters and capabilities into the unit that most users don't use everything they offer. That said, tons and tons of people really enjoy the portability and versatility they offer. Vox and Boss make some really good ones. I'm not a huge fan of the pod but I am considering picking up a line 6 amp and pedal board. We'll see.

Presently I have a pedal board that includes a hendrix wah, seymour duncan tube overdrive, bbe clean boost, electroharmonix deluxe memory man, boss rd20 rotary speaker emulator, boss noise suppressor and a planet waves tuner. It's starting to get out of hand...hahahah...it just keeps growing and growing....but that's part of the fun. I saw Ian Moore perform a few years back and his pedal board was 4 feet square and he had boomerang off to the side of that! It was huge. Ever since then I became really interested in pedal combinations and the different colours I can get out of different boxes.

That said, it's not the most practical approach, especially gigging in the band I'm with which is why I'm considering picking up a Line 6. We'll see.

My suggestion is to get friendly with the local pedal guru at your guitar center...if they have one. Not all locations have a really qualified effects specialist. Houston is lucky because we have a guy named Brian Lacher at the westheimer store. The guy is a genius and an encyclopedia when it comes to pedal effects, pickups, mics etc so I'm constantly tugging on his ear. Just test out stuff, take your guitar and mess around with different combinations. You'll get a feel real quick for whether or not you prefer individual boxes or multi-effects processors. Once you make that determination then you start narrowing your options in terms of brands etc...

If you are looking for a unique sounding Distortion pedal, take a look at the Digitech Grunge. I use it to record with and it just has a different sound to me than any other distortion.
    Here's an example:
    http://www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?PID=951538&t=5996
    That's with single coils...

Boss DD-3 is a good delay pedal too... Those are the only effects I really use.

The Line 6 stuff is good, but the amp models all sound the same after awhile. If you just plan on chilling at home, a POD is most likely all you would ever need though...

For playing at home, i would go with the Behringer V-amp 2. they're only $99 bucks. I run mine through the clean channel of an old peavey bandit 65 that i bought in '86. I changed the stock speaker years ago to a Celestion Modern Lead 70. The VH setting on the V-amp is 2B. sounds pretty wicked in my computer room, man. you can even run phaser and/or flanger pedals in front of it (if you don't like the on-board effects).

i would recomend any of the radial pedals...the tone bone for example is simply stunning. multi fx are great if you're tight on cash and space or simply lugging tons of pedals round becomes a pain in the ass, like many people have said there are a few drawbacks...like they can all sound a bit samey and artificial and you cant change the order of the effects in the signal chain so u cant experiment....and lets face it these things matter when u are trying to develope your own tone.
as for stomp boxes...heres what i use
ibanez ts9 tube screamer...simply awsome try one
mxr phase 90 (original 70's one..still use it, still sounds great)
morley bad horsey wah...sounds good plus u dont have to remember to turn it off!
    digitech whammy...great fun
    boss super chorus
    boss stereo delay
korg tuner...i cannot stress how invaluable one of these is !
i have also ordered a tone bone and a roger mayer fuzz face and somehow will find somewhere to to put them on my pedal board(or just build a new one)

all these run into my 5150 and jcm 800 heads...i also use an a/b box that i built at college years ago for switching amps or running them in stereo.

bet advice i can give though is get out there to a store (or several) take as much of you own kit as possible and try as much as you can through your kit (coz using the stores gear isnt gonna sound the same as when u get the stuff home)

    hope this helps

All good stuff, MXR is one of the best. Boss makes great things as well. Dont look past the cheap piece of crap pedals either.. if you have 20 or 30 bucks to spend take a chance and get something not big name.. I remember in 88 I wanted a delay and I bought cause it was affordable, a Rocktek Delay, a 30 dollar analog pedal that sucked!! However, while the delay itself was only like 400 millisecond and not long it was good enough to make some cool echos and slight delay that I wanted, not enough for cathedral but good enough to play gigs with and the bonus was when I put it in front of the other pedals in the chain it was so cheap and crappy that I found out it leaked sound! It ended up making a reverb sound when it was off cause it leaked the settings out slightly, so I ended up with a reverb/delay pedal and loved it!!

Spekaing of cheap-but-cool pedals, look at the Arion Tubulator. I got mine on Ebay for $20, including shipping. Its a clone of the Ibanez Tube Screamer circuit, so you can always mod it, too, if that's your thing.

all this talk of pedals and thinking about it theres no substitute for taking a great sounding tube amp (a jcm 45 anyone?) and turning the fucker ALL the way up and just blastin...acdc have been doing it forever and they are about the most consistantly brilliant sounding rock bands ever...sometimes less is a whole lot more
