Sobering Thoughts: Van Halen gets hip on hips
    By JOHN SAKAMOTO

Vascular necrosis, magnetic resonance scans, sobriety ... a chat with Eddie Van Halen sure ain't what it used to be.

The newly sober, 40-year-old guitarist is hobbling through his band's latest tour - which pulls into the Molson Amphitheatre for shows Friday and Saturday - on a pulverized hip.

"I have what's called a vascular necrosis, which means the top of the ball of my hip joint is dead bone," professor Van Halen is saying in his best professorial tone recently from Boston. "It's just from years of drinking and jumping on it and not feeling the damage I was doing.

"The thing is, I haven't had a drink now in 10 months - actually, August 2 was my 10-month anniversary - and the doctor says there's a slim chance it could get better."

If it doesn't, Van Halen will have to get an artificial hip.

The guitarist's doctor - who has performed the same operation on both Liza Minnelli and Elizabeth Taylor - "is trying to talk me out of it," he admits, "but the quality of life sucks. I can't run, I can't exercise, I can't play golf, I can't jump onstage. Give me a new hip, I'll be back to normal."

As for finally managing to stay dry for any significant length of time, he says the benefits were immediate: "I'm playing better than I ever have.

"I used to walk off stage thinking I kicked ass, and I'd listen to the tapes the next day and go, `Woh, I didn't play as good as I thought I did.' Now I walk offstage going, `Ah, I could've done a little better,' and when I listen to the tape, I played a lot better than I thought I did. Which is the great thing about being sober."

    And the not-so-great thing?

"I get nervous. Before, I'd just numb it."

Van Halen laughs off an incident this past spring when he was detained at the suburban Burbank Airport for having a loaded gun in his luggage. He was subsequently fined $1,000 and put on a year's probation.

"I just forgot it was in there," he explains, adding the incident got blown out of proportion by a "Barney Fife cop."

"But I do carry a gun for protection. We've got a lot of fans, and I don't know if they're superfans or freaks."

    Has he ever been threatened?

"Oh, I've been stalked, I get all kinds of weird letters, I've got people living in vans outside my house. You just don't know if they're cool or not.

"And when you've got family to protect," he adds, referring to wife Valerie Bertinelli and their four-year-old son, Wolfgang, "you like to be prepared."

Once the tour grinds to a halt in November, Van Halen will take care of his hip problem, one way or the other. Then the band is talking about putting together a best-of CD, a modest "one track off each record" kind of deal.

Why not go the fancy (and lucrative) box-set route?

"Because that, to me, is like the end of the book," he sneers. "And, being sober, I'm gung-ho and ready to go."

And there are other stories from that era where people have said he wasn't completely sober. But he was trying to be and stretching for the ideal of a positive and sober lifestyle. If Ed had stayed with it who knows how things might have turned out.

I've read this interview before. It's kind of a downer now. Van Halen really was still all about staying active and pushing forward at that time. The shit about the greatest hits is of course not as casual a thing as it was presented in the article; that was a real source of tension between the band, Sammy, and Ray Danniels.

    *sigh* What could have been...
