Default Who's running a diesel truck??

Looking to buy a new-to-me tow vehicle for camping in February...

    I'm leaning towards a 2004/2005 F250 Crew Cab...

Anyone on the 'Links own a diesel? Please chime in...

Try looking in to a Dodge with a V-10. It's not a diesel. My brother had a dually pickup with a diesel engine to pull his horse trailer, with three horses and all the tac needed, plus personal items, camping gear, and it has a small sleeping/living area at the front of the trailer. Throw 5 people in the truck and he still had problems pulling. When he got his V-10, he had a ton of power to spare. On top of that, he actually GAINED mileage compared to the diesel. It also has a standard rear axle, not a dually.

If you're set on going to go with a diesel, my advice would be a Duramax from Chevy or a Cummins from Dodge. They're less expensive than the Ford Powerstroke to buy AND repair. And the Cummins is far easier to get fixed because you can take it to ANY Cummins shop from a Dodge dealer to a semi truck diesel shop where semi's with Cummins engines go.

This is what my brother told me to do. He should know, he's a trained diesel mechanic in the Marines and they use predominately Dodge or Chevy.

Of course you could always splurge and get your CDL and drive a real diesel like me :

I've heard that too. I guess I could see that if you were constantly pulling the trailer and a full load. Best diesel for the money on the small truck market is a Cummins though.

I'd also still look in to the V-10. Just talking to my sister-in-law, she said it saved them a couple grand at the end of negotiations.

I've heard nothing but horror stories from the Ford crowd since they went to the 6.0 diesel. Read/heard several contractors complain their Fords were in the shop more than on the road. The Duramax did have tranny issues when they first were introduced a few years back. Dodge is tried and true with its cummins.

My hubby has a Chevy diesel dually. Just a few things to consider is first off, diesel is quite a bit more expensive right now than gas, they require two batteries to power the glow plugs to start up which is more expensive when you have to replace them, you need to plug them in in the winter time to keep them warm if you live in a cold climate to make sure they start because it takes a lot to get them to turn over, and it can be a pain in the rear to find a station selling diesel at times. On the other hand, his truck is 14 years old and still runs good but then again, it still has less than 100,000 miles on it. And it has yanked anything he's put behind it with ease which has included a 28' camper and a 21' boat.

I will say, I do like the interior of the Dodge, and the fact it (2500) still has a solid front axle... Unlike the Ford and Chevy...

    Hmmm...

IMO that's a load of BS. My friend and his dad own their own metal fabrication shop and they do all their deliveries. They have a 2003 Sierra with the Duramax that has 150,000 miles on it, and they abuse the hell out of that truck between hauling full loads in the bed, ow their flatbed trailer, or plowing snow. The truck hardly gets it's regular maintenance (20 - 30000 miles on an oil change) and they've never had any issues what so ever, especially with the trans.

Hey RRMB, what do you think of your International? I worked for an Int. dealer/garage awhile back, and I heard a lot of complaints about the newer models.

I talked to one driver who was with a moving company in Jersey, and they had purchased a handful of Eagles brand spanking new, and he made it as far down 95 as Fayetteville and put it in the shop. Some defect in the fuel tanks on every truck they bought. Wal-Mart cancelled a big order on the '06 models.

    Just curious, is all.

Well I've always been a Chevy man myself and I enjoy my D-max. Like what Zeo was saying, I've never really had problems with them. I will say that what some people call a trany problem really turns out to be the 'shift switch' on the transmission. Make sure you have a reliable mechanic that you trust work on your deisels. I've hauled trailers, cars, and cattle trailers with mine and nver a problem. I've got buddies that swear by the Cummins, but the re-sale is bad. The Powerstroke is all my grandfather ever uses and really never had a problem over the years either. So in a nutshell, it's about what brand of truck you like. Diesel motors will run forever even when you don't take care of them, but they cost out the ass when you even need minor repairs. I'd say make sure, once again, you trust a mechanic. And what ever he is cerivited in, then that would be my deisel brand of truck or Suv for you. Out.

    I have a 2000 F250 7.3 Powerstroke w/ a 6 speed manual.
I wouldn't trade it for ANY 6.0 Powerstroke.
I've heard good things about the new ones, but its too early to tell.
I'm not a fan of the Dodge trucks. They are good units, I just don't like the styling of them.
The Duramax's that I know of have had injector issues. And it is not cheap fix.

Back to the 7.3 Ford; my uncle has a buddy that sells used trucks. He said he has 20+ people waiting on any 7.3 that comes up for sale. For whatever that's worth to you.
