I have worked out on one for a bit. You would be better to go buy 2-20lb dumbbells and a flat bench that you can incline and decline. The bench and dumbbells will cost you a shit load less than a bowflex. You don't need a very fancy bench just something fairly sturdy that will adjust. I have worked out on one for years, I think I spent $90 on it. It isn't a bench press bench.

I had one for several years before selling it. It was a nice change from free weights for a little while and you definitely get a different kind of workout. I also kept my gym membership and would alternate between free weights some weeks and the Bowflex the other weeks. It was a very good routine for a while because you really do hit the muscles in different ways. It's an effective machine and I can't really tool on it all that much. My only negative opinion of it was leg workouts. From what I remember I never once got in a good leg workout on it. It was very awkward for that but maybe they've redesigned it a bit. I owned mine from 2000-2003.

My opinion: If you're someone who currently does not work out and don't intend on really setting yourself up with a quality home gym consisting of free weights then you should consider it. It's compact and you can hit your upper body pretty well. Again, if you don't do free weights now or go to a gym now then it won't seem like a step down to you. You'll definitely get in some good workouts. Personally I just prefer free weights and have a sweet setup of equipment in my house.

for a clothes hanger it works great..

seriously get a gym membership and don't do what 75% of the people with a gym membership do.....actually go to the gym...start slow and light, remembering that form is the most important...and go on a regular basis.....it's just that simple.

The problem with springs and rubber bands is the resistance
is not constant. By the the time you're in the 'down' phase of
the movement, there is generally little to no resistance, compared
with free weights. Or as post #2 nicely summated: "piece of shit".

You're better off going the Foreman route than wasting your
time, money and space on these dust collectors. I.e. Ol' school
yard workout of pushups, chinups, situps, etc. As for the little
targeted muscles, even older school: yoga. Swear to god.

I wouldn't spend the money on these types of machines...they seem waaaay overpriced for what they provide.

Better to do old fashioned push ups and chinups or go to a gym.

If you have a Fitness 19 in your area, you can get on for 19 bucks a month, 10 if you get on during a special.

I've never met anyone who used their bowflex or other as seen on tv gym equipment for anything beyond throwing clothes on.
    Stay out of it, dude.

My cousin bought a Bowflex about 4 years ago, got about 3 months of use out of it before it became a dust collector. He's tried to sell it to me at least 6 or 7 times.

My daughter really wanted one of those and even ordered their little dvd and brochure. I told her she was better off with good old fashioned exercise minus the fancy contraption.

So far so good. She's down a size just from exercising - bike riding, walking, lifting weights, etc. She didn't even need that machine.

Had a friend who referred to his as a clothes rack. His wife used it to hang clothes on after a few months. I agree with OLO on buying some dumbells and an inclinable bench.

We bought a treadmill a few years ago, and I have to admit that this thing was actually worth the purchase. Comes in mighty handy when it's 95+ degrees outside, to say nothing of after an afternoon FL thunderstorm turns out dirt road to mush.

Get a gym membership and start on machines. I've started doing it, it's already working if I go 3 times a week.

nope, but like VHR I have a treadmill and its the best investment...only here it's because in the summer, I have trouble getting out of the office and in the winter it's too treacherous to go outside for a walk...mine's in my office

but I do have one of those total gyms that I use in spirts....I can do a lot of pilates stuff on it

but I can't see where it would be a good work out for a guy
