    Default Scientists Solve Rock-Paper-Scissors

Scientists believe they have worked out the secret to winning at paper, scissors, stone.

While most people are aware that stone blunts scissors, scissors cut paper and paper covers stone, there is a psychological element to the game which many players may have missed.

According to New Scientist magazine, the way to win is to start with scissors.

Research shows that stone, also called rock, is the most popular of the three possible moves in the game.

That means that your opponent is likely to choose paper, because they will expect to you to start the game with stone.

By going with scissors, you achieve an early victory.

The scissors strategy has proven very successful in the past - in 2005 it secured auction house Christie's a £10 million deal.

A Japanese art collector who could not decide whether to sell his Impressionist paintings through Christie's or rival auction house Sotheby's, instructed them to play the game against each other.

Christie's consulted its employees on strategies and, on the advice of the director's 11-year-old daughters, chose scissors.

The little girls, keen fans of the game, explained that "everybody expects you to choose rock".

As predicted, Sotheby's went for the open palm in a bid to beat the expected clenched fist, and lost the deal.

There are a number of different strategies to secure victory in the game once it gets going. New Scientist suggests: "You could try the double bluff, where you tell your opponent what you are going to throw - then do it.

"No one believes you'll do it, so they won't play the throw that beats the throw you are playing."

Alternatively you could throw the move that would have beaten your opponent's previous move. The logic here is that players subconsciously try to beat their own previous move.

I don't understand why they credit scientists for the rock paper scissors win. It was discovered by an 11-year-old girl!

Who is funding research on Rock-Paper-Scissors? Is there not some disease out there that we are still trying to find a cure for? Sorry but this sort of "research" about a child's game irks me when I know there is money to be put to better use.

I think the bigger question here is, when is science going to give
us scissors that can cut through rock? Game over.

the kind of people who give grants for this sort of stuff are no different than we are. We don't spend every single penny we have beyond our daily expenses on noble altruist endeavours. We buy playstations and we go to vegas or we buy cigarettes or go see a movie etc etc. For all we know the guy who funded this gave a few thousand bucks to some interns and 40 million to cancer research.

Or the story isn't real at all or some grad students did this on their spare time...let's try to keep the moral outrage at a minimum on this one...it's rock paper scissors for god's sake.

Yep. I have a grant to see who's better, Sam or Dave.
Both may look good on paper, but which one really rocks?
I'll let you know how it turns out.

How much money exactly, is held in the paper you hold? As I can certainly find some seafood raw bars that would be more than happy to accept the funding, and thusly make this a public endeavor.

Hell, even "Hooters" sells "Oyster Roasts" to aid the discussion, along with taps full of beer.

Please man, do not keep your desire for research a private enterprise.

You're right, if I was handing out my personal money to spend on any kind of research I wanted then it is my money to spend. However, if this is government money than we the people who are giving it to the government to dole out do have a say. Sorry, it is unacceptable to me to spend tax dollars doing studies on Rock Paper Scissors when it could be put to better use. And it is moral outrage when our over bloated government who tax the hell out of us blows so much money on pork barrel projects.

I know Broke you are very much a live and let live kind of guy and in a lot of ways, I am too. But it gets SSSOOOOO old hearing how the government throws away our money when so many of us work so hard for it. It's even more disturbing when so many of those wasted dollars could really be put to good use helping needy kids or curing actual diseases. That's where I'm coming from. I guess after having kids, it did change a lot of the ways I look at things. I try to teach them to give back in a meaning full way by donating clothes, food, used toys they no longer play with, or volunteering. I hope if they one day have enough money to give to research, it will be for something that betters our life, not how to win at R-P-S.
