Default Untraditional Students Rewarded With Scholarships

Students with promise get group scholarships
    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

English teacher Qur'an Shakir was leading a field trip at the CNN Center earlier this fall when a college recruiter approached her.

The woman, Charisse Williams, began talking about how she could provide four-year, full-tuition scholarships for students just like Shakir's from Atlanta's W.D. Mohammed High School.

Not only would students get a nearly free financial ride, they also could attend some of the best colleges and universities in the country.

"I said, 'That sounds too good to be true. What's the catch?' " Shakir recalled. "She said, 'The catch is you need to get the students' names in by 5 o'clock.' "
