Tiger escapes from zoo cage, kills one, injures two

Tiger escapes from zoo cage, kills one, injures two

    http://www.wistv.com/Global/story.as...42898&nav=0RaP

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (NBC) - The San Francisco Zoo is open 365 days a year. But on Wednesday, it was closed as police and zoo officials combed the grounds, trying to figure out how a Siberian tiger was able to attack three visitors.

Nevil Gittens of the San Francisco Police Department says, "We don't know, as of yet, exactly how it occurred in terms of, number one, how the tiger got out, number two, the sequence. That's something that we're trying to piece together."

On Christmas night, just as the zoo was closing, the 350-pound animal somehow escaped from its enclosed pen and went on the attack, killing a young man and critically injuring a second. It was in the process of mauling a third man when police found her.

Sgt. Steve Mannina of the San Francisco Police Department says, "The tiger re-engaged the victim. As the officers moved in closer, the tiger focused its attention on the officers and started coming toward the officers. That's when the officers fired."

With Tatiana dead, police searched all night to make sure other animals hadn't escaped and that there weren't any more victims. None have been found and the two surviving victims are expected to live.

Dr. Rochelle Dicker of San Francisco General Hospital says, "By the time they got here, they were very stable, not close to death. Really it was just a matter of washing out their wounds."

Tatiana has harmed before, tearing a zookeeper's arm a year ago.

Ron Magill of the Miami Metro Zoo says, "To watch their ability to jump, their ability to hold onto things, their power is immense. It's almost beyond description."

The zoo is confident Tatiana did not leave through an open door. The tiger's pen is surrounded by a 15-foot wide moat and a 20-foot high wall. How she escaped and why she went on a rampage is a mystery.

    ***********************************

What I would like to know, was there a plan in place at the SF Zoo, for the SF Zoo staff to shoot and immoblize an escaped animal with a dart rifle ? ?

We had a gorilla escape at the Dallas Zoo several years ago, and it was shot dead by Dallas Police before the Zoo could get their response team together to shoot it with the dart rifle....

I want to know how this did or did not come into play in the SF Zoo escape...

I don't think that in all the decades the SF Zoo has been open, that there's even been an escape from the Lion House altho I c/b mistaken.

I tend to think that somebody left something open. It's pretty scary tho.

I really regret that they had to kill that beautiful Siberian tiger, which is already on the endangered species list.

In the AP article, which chronicles this story, it mentions that the zoo actually has an emergency team on call if an animal should ever escape. In the ensuing panic someone called the police instead.

The other incident to which this story alludes was a result of human error. The keeper was feeding the tiger incorrectly. The keeper dangled the meat in front of the tiger and the tiger swiped at it, grabbing the keeper's arm in the process.

They shot and killed the tiger, yet the lawyers were aloud to run around free on the news networks and discuss the legal repercussions of the incident.

I hate hearing about things like this. More and more I'm feeling like we shouldn't be taking wild animals out of their natural habitats in order to put them on display in public. When something goes wrong we kill the animal, but it was just acting out of instinct.

i cant stand zoos...they are a shining disgusting testimony to humanity's arrogance and ignorance. The Houston Zoo in particular is among the shittiest I've seen. For instance, elephants which are highly social and, with their pack of dozens of elephants, tend to walk upwards of a hundred miles a day. At the Houston zoo they have three and they're in a yard slightly larger than my backyard. Most recently I saw they had a bald eagle...wings clipped, dirty, no water in his bowl. The BALD FUCKING EAGLE. What a beautiful ironic moment, to see our national bird, a symbol of pride, strength, courage, ambition with its wings clipped and needing a bath.

My wife and I went to the SF Zoo a couple of years ago.
I remember the tigers were pretty agressive. Not that anybody was provoking them, but it seemed as if they had a bad attitude.
(The lions didn't seem to care)

That being said, I would really like to know how it got out. I saw the 'precautions' on the news story, but if memory serves correct, there are areas that I believed either could have cleared if 'properly motivated'.
I hate to think anyone would be provoking these animals, but it is in the nature of some children(or teenagers) to do such things. It just bizarre.

I remember our last visit to the SF zoo, it was a lot different than I remembered it. But one thing that stood out was when we saw the gorillas. One of them was trying to hide from the crowds, it kept looking at everyone with a sad look. I really felt for the animal.

    Yeah zoos suck.

I hear ya'! I tend to root for the animals in these situations. Especially if those kids were taunting the tiger:

If that's the case, then I'd say the tiger was doing us a favor by thinning out the herd - Darwinism at it's finest. Unfortunatley the tiger was shot, though.

+1 on the sympathy for the tiger list. I understand why they had to put
the animal down, but c'mon, it was a tiger. That's what tigers do. That'd
be like killing OLO for loving women.

Okay, but if you're a cop and you come upon a Tiger standing over the body of someone who's still alive, what do you do?
