Default Santa Died For Your Mastercard

Santa crucified to protest Christmas commercialism

A Bremerton, Wash. man has registered his protest of the commercialization of Christmas by crucifying Santa.

"Santa has been perverted from who he started out to be," said Art Conrad. "Now he's the person being used by corporations to get us to buy more stuff."

A likeness Santa is nailed to a five-metre-high crucifix outside Conrad's home.

On one of Conrad's Christmas cards, a photo of the crucified Santa carries the message, "Santa died for your MasterCard."

"I don't make a lot of money myself these days, and I definitely feel the expectation to keep up with the pressures of Christmas," he said.

The 52-year-old Conrad, who likes to poke fun at political correctness, is a newcomer to his neighbourhood.

Another of his cards says, "Have a slightly demented Christmas."

While many have stopped to take pictures, no one has told him they are offended, he said.

Others were upset that Conrad used to the head of his animated singing Santa to create the crucifix version, leaving a headless singing Santa to belt out seasonal classics.

Neighbour Jake Tally got a chuckle out of the display, but thought Conrad was putting out a mixed message.

"I don't really know what to think. I know it's about God but Santa has nothing to do with it," he told the Kitsap Sun newspaper.

Conrad told the Seattle Times his display has nothing to do with religion.

He is also unlikely to duplicate the display in the future.

"Like [environmental sculptor] Christo, once you do an installation you don't do it again," Conrad said. "This is my year for this. I don't see the need to do it again."
"Watch what people are cynical about, and one can often discover what they lack. -- Gen. George S. Patton

I thinks it's a very creative protest. Don't know what the little kids in the neighborhood will think, though.

    Christianity is all about Forgiveness.

It's not about what everyone else does, it's only about how you conduct yourself.

    This guy has failed Christ.

    I understand this guy completely.

Santa of course has nothing to do with any religious faith but using a cross, an obvious christian symbol, might be deemed offensive to some. However, even non-christians tend to use the cross as a symbol of sacrifice so..............

It has all got a bit stupid though. As an atheist I struggle this time of year. I have quite a few nephews and nieces who obviously enjoy the whole shebang. I do not feel it is my place to give my views on the matter, they're not my kids, so my principles are compromised.

What do I do? Of course, I play the game for the sake of my loved ones. I know what I believe and whilst I disagree with the basis for this festival the kids just see it is as a bit of fun and good chance to get their hands on some nice little presents.

What troubles me more is the very point this guy is making. I was walking around shopping today and I had one of those, "Oh, what are we all doing?" moments. People getting themselves into debt, spending money they cannot afford for what appears to be an ever more ungrateful recipient. Hearing worried parents, friends, relatives etc panicking that their gift would perhaps not be appreciated....."they won't like this you know..."

I am going to enjoy this xmas because it will be the first time in many years my whole immediate family has been together in one place but I always have this nagging sense of wrongness about it all.

If I were a christian I think i would be even more troubled somehow. It has become a perverted version of itself, aided and abetted entirely by (gulp) people who want to make money from people.

It just makes me feel that something went badly wrong somewhere.

    baaaah.......humbug...

This got my attention. I'm an atheist as well, but I dont understand the idea of "struggling with Christmas". Sure, I don't subscribe to the religious elements of the holiday, but that hardly means there should be a problem with giving to family, friends, and sometimes total strangers. Hell, I try to do that regardless of the day of year, but what's so hard about sitting with your nephew and watching their face light up when that strip past the last scrap of wrapping paper to behold their gift? Togetherness, family.......food and booze?? Hell yeah!

Maybe it's just me but I sleep just fine knowing I was able to partake. I don't even have any problems saying "Merry Christmas". Fuck it. My principles seem to be intact by the time I get back on the plane and go home.

Understood. Maybe struggle was the wrong word, though I find I have to keep my mouth shut about my ideas, not my place or even appropriate to enter into that kind of debate with a five year old anyway.

Yes, of course I love to see loved ones' faces light up etc. but your point of "regardless of the day of the year" is maybe the point is was trying to make. Why this day of all days?

As I said though, it is the drastic commercialisation, some might say monetary rape by guilt, surrounding this particular festival that bothers me most. It bothers me less being an atheist than if I were a christian though.

I sleep just fine though. I get in, I get the job done, I get out.

to say that's in poor taste doesn't even begin to put it into words. Certain things just aren't funny. The only question is who would be more pissed, Christians or children. The guy's lucky he doesn't live in the middle east and made a similar "joke" about a Muslim holiday.

Well, for me at least - one of the most important things of being an athiest are that your ideas are you own - or my own anyway. Best not to go ramming them down the throats of others much in the way certain religious folk are dead set and determined to save your uncleansed soul. But once again, maybe that's the way you view athiesm, as something to be taught. As for taking the tykes aside and all that.....big no-no. The parents I'm sure would be a touch peeved, and rightfully so.

Yes, of course I love to see loved ones' faces light up etc. but your point of "regardless of the day of the year" is maybe the point is was trying to make. Why this day of all days?
Good point, but two athiests arent gonna change 2000 years of mindset. Besides, that ain't our job. Just enjoy the free spread and the egg nog.

As I said though, it is the drastic commercialisation, some might say monetary rape by guilt, surrounding this particular festival that bothers me most. It bothers me less being an atheist than if I were a christian though.
Indeed, by all arguments every Christian alive should probably be bugged beet red over it. As a godless scum however, the only thing about it that bugs me are the annoying, repetitive commericials. Bleh!

I sleep just fine though. I get in, I get the job done, I get out.

Well, even the Christians have to deal with the bank statements too. I wonder if they say "JESUS CHRIST, I spent THAT much goddamn money??"
