That is pretty nifty, yet would be highly impractical in areas of heavy rainfall. Unless of course one water-proofed the interior of the car.

All in all, an amazing idea.

    three words...

    um-brel-la

...which in any NORMAL opening car/truck door would be less effective and/or more hampered by. Rain and snow is as much of a problem now as it would be in with these disappearing car doors. savy?
If eddie were down and out on a sidewalk playing guitar I'd be next to him with a bottle and a blanky braving the cold. I would be sucking my thumb happily making chupa chupa noises in sync with the petroglyphic sounds that came from the mighty finger tips of Edward Van Halen.

No, I do NOT savy. The entire side of the vehicle (no longer protected by the normally functioning door) is wide open, now including the backseat area.

Yes, you, your hairstyle and clothing are protected by your "three words" (um-brel-la), yet in the meantime the interior is exposed to the elements. Did the notion of fungus or rot occur to you, not to mention foul smelling odors?

Kind of adds weight when one takes in the example of the child (pictured in the video with the happy, carefree mom) in the back seat, breathing in this malfeasance.

Not to mention how blissfully Utopian (and therefor unrealistic) this ideal is...nothing like helping out the car-jackers out there beyond fantasy-land.

Try pulling up to an urban arena to witness a show or basketball game with this "device". At that point, fuck ya and your "um-brel-la".

i can't see that working well with the current side impact regs, or side airbags.

i see they add an armrest to the front seat, is that supposed to take place of a side impact beam?

if the major automakers thought this was a good idea, we would have seen it on concepts already.

yeah it seems like it would hinder the side impact bags and beams as well as expose the car to a lot more outside dirt/water/snow etc...

however, major automakers aren't always right on top of stuff...they've made decision after to decision to NOT add various features that would have made cars safer or more convenient time after time because they couldn't agree on a universal style/code/method etc...

Yes, there are some drawbacks, but the concept is very cool. I had to send that link out to everyone this morning.

i would have to think they have some sort of manual release just like any other door in case the automatic mechanism/motor/battery dies...

if not...well...better hope the jaws of life get there quick...
