    Default Let's Talk Lyrics

Ok, the mods can't shut me down on this one!

Let's talk about our favorite lyrics, from any artist or band. They can be funny, strange, sad, exciting, romantic, sexy.......whatever.

I just heard this song the other day and it definitely made me smile. Hadn't heard it in probably 20 years.

From Eric Burdon and War, Spill The Wine:

    (spoken):

I was once out strolling one very hot summer's day
When I thought I'd lay myself down to rest
in a big field of tall grass
I lay there in the sun and felt it caressing my face

And I fell asleep and dreamed
I dreamed I was in a Hollywood movie
And that I was the star of the movie
This really blew my mind, the fact that me,
    an overfed, long-haired leaping gnome
should be the star of a Hollywood movie

But there I was, I was taken to a place, the hall of the mountain kings
I stood high upon a mountain top, naked to the world
In front of every kind of girl, there was
black ones, round ones, big ones, crazy ones...

Out of the middle came a lady
She whispered in my ear something crazy
    She said:

    (sung):

Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl
Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl

    (spoken):

I thought to myself what could that mean
Am I going crazy or is this just a dream
    Now, wait a minute
I know I'm lying in a field of grass somewhere
so it's all in my head
and then.. I heard her say one more time:

    [sung:]

Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl
Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl

    .

Performed by The Band (Sung By Richard Manuel)
    "It Makes No Difference"

It makes no diff'rence where I turn
I can't get over you and the flame still burns
It makes no diff'rence, night or day
The shadow never seems to fade away

And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door

    Now there's no love
    As true as the love
    That dies untold
But the clouds never hung so low before

It makes no diff'rence how far I go
Like a scar the hurt will always show
It makes no diff'rence who I meet
They're just a face in the crowd
    On a dead-end street
And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door

    These old love letters
    Well, I just can't keep
    'Cause like the gambler says
    Read 'em and weep
And the dawn don't rescue me no more

Without your love I'm nothing at all
Like an empty hall it's a lonely fall
    Since you've gone it's a losing battle
    Stampeding cattle
    They rattle the walls

And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door

Well, I love you so much
    It's all I can do
Just to keep myself from telling you
That I never felt so alone before
"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man."

Aerosmith - Don't Get Mad, Get Even off of PUMP

I'll tell you little secret make you want to jump and shout
when you talk to me in circles take your foot out of your mouth
it's hard enough to make it when you're livin' on the street
and you want to tell somebody but you got to be discreet
then you catch your girlfriend with her skirt hiked up to here
honey, don't get mad, get even

don't get mad, get even [3x]

say the times they be a-changin' though the blind lead the blind
you know your head is empty though there's somethin' on your mind
been shackin' up with Lucy, then when the morning comes
you're with Sally in the alley and the junkies and the bums
you wonder why your girlfriend has her skirt hiked up to here
honey, don't get mad, get even

Don't get mad, get even [3x]

(...'til I can see the white o' your eyes, baby...)
    (...I'm gonna kick ass...)
(...just wait 'til you see what I got in store for you)

roll the dice get lucky 'cause they roll you for the dime
you got nothin' else to lose if you only lose your mind
when pleasure that is shallow causes trouble to be deep
you've been dusted with the devil while he sweeps you off your feet

I'll tell you little secret make you want to jump and shout
when you talk to me in circles take your foot out of your mouth
it's hard enough to make it when you're livin' on the street
and you hate to be a wiseguy when your feet are in concrete
oh, sleepin' with the dogs, and you wake up with the fleas
honey, don't get mad, get even

There are very few guys out there that can write stuff more creative than Steven Tyler....in fact maybe nobody....

It takes a true gift of talent and skill to write complete and utter nonsense that one can actually sing along to.

as lyricists go, Ian Moore, Adam Duritz, Gary Cherone, Jon Bon Jovi's lyrics, though having become much spottier and cliche, has written some of the best lyrics of anyone in his generation. The These Days and Keep the Faith records are full of great lyrics. For a while there, no one was as good...

Pete Townshend wrote the most amazing lyrics to me. In Quadrophenia by The Who!!!!!! Here are some songs I love from it...

    The Real Me

    Pete Townshend © 1973 Towser Tunes Inc./Fabulous Music Ltd./Abkco Music Inc./BMI
Note: * denotes a verse from Pete's demo version

I went back to the doctor
    To get another shrink.
I have to tell him about my weekend
But he never betrays what he thinks.

Can you see the real me,
    Doctor?
Can you see the real me,
    Doctor?

I went back to my mother.
I said "I'm crazy, ma, help me!"
She said "I know how it feels, son
'Cause it runs in the family."

Can you see the real me,
    Mother?
Can you see the real me,
    Mother?

The cracks between the paving stones
    Like rivers of flowing veins.
    Strange people who know me
Peeping from behind every window pane.
The girl I used to love
    Lives in this yellow house.
    Yesterday she passed me by.
She doesn't want to know me now.

Can you see the real me
    Can you, can you?
Can you see the real me
    Can you, can you?

I went to the holy man
    Full of lies and hate.
I seemed to scare him a little,
So he showed me to the golden gate.

Can you see the real me, preacher?
    Preacher
Can you see the real me, preacher?

*[Rock and roll's gonna do me in
    Do me an evil wrong
Funny how your best friends turn out
It was good for oh so long
    Can't stop myself getting letters
And then the people try to turn me back
    Publishers want my memoir
    And the limousines are black
Can't you see the real me...
    Rock and roll?]

    Cut My Hair

    Pete Townshend © 1973 Towser Tunes Inc./Fabulous Music Ltd./Abkco Music Inc./BMI
    Why should I care
If I have to cut my hair.
I've got to move with the fashions
    Or be outcast.
    I know I should fight
But my old man, he's really alright.
And I'm still living at home
    (Even though it won't last.)

Zoot suit, white jacket with side vents
    Five inches long.
I'm out on the street again.
    And I'm leaping along.
Dressed right, for a beach fight
    But I just can't explain
    Why that uncertain feeling
Is still here in my brain.

    The kids at school
Have parents that seem so cool,
Though I don't want to hurt 'em
    Mine want me their way.
I clean my room and my shoes
But my mother found a box of blues
And there doesn't seem much hope
    They'll let me stay.

    Zoot suit, etc.

Why do I have to be different to them
Just to earn the respect of a dance hall friend?
We have the same old row, again and again.
Why do I have to move with a crowd
Of kids that hardly notice I'm around?
I have to work myself to death
    Just to fit in.

    I'm coming down
Got home on the very first train from town.
My dad just left for work,
    He wasn't talking.
    It's all a game
'Cause inside I'm just the same.
My fried egg makes me sick
    First thing in the morning.

    The Punk And The Godfather

    Pete Townshend © 1973 Towser Tunes Inc./Fabulous Music Ltd./Abkco Music Inc./BMI
    Punk:
You declared you would be three inches taller.
You only became what we made you.
Thought you were chasing a destiny calling.
You only earned what we gave you.
You fell and cried as the people were starving.
Now you know that we blame you.
You tried to walk on the trail we were carving.
Now you know that we framed you.

    Godfather:
I'm the guy in the sky
    Flying high, flashing eyes,
    No surprise I told lies
I'm the punk in the gutter.

    I'm the new president
But I grew and I bent.
Don't you know, don't it show,
I'm the punk with the stutter.

    Punk:
We tried to speak between lines of oration.
You could only repeat what we told you.
Your axe belongs to a dying nation.
They don't know that we own you.
You're watching movies trying to find the feelers.
You only see what we show you.
We're the slaves of a phony leader.
Breathe the air we have blown you.

    Godfather:
I have to be careful not to preach.
    I can't pretend that I can teach.
And yet I live your future out
By pounding stages like a clown.
And on the dance floor broken glass.
    The bloody faces slowly pass
The numbered seats in empty rows.
It all belongs to me, you know.

Right Now you're reading my post!

his songs have become as predictable and trite as anything and it's a real shame. That stretch of records they cut from Slippery to These Days was as strong a stretch as anyone has had in a long time and the lyrics that guy wrote, on stuff like Bed of Roses, This Ain't a Love Song, These Days, Something to Believe In and others are just incredible...

    "Karma Wheel" - Sammy Hagar

    I can't close my eyes
    Feelin' what I see
    I turn away
    But still can see

    I can't change the world
But I can change my mind
    It's not enough
    It's not enough

    Color your thoughts
    Color your speech
Bury your head deep in a sleep
    Harden your shell
    Head in a hole

    And it's haunting me
    It's changin me
    Seems so unreal
    This karma wheel

    Run from your feelings
    Head in a hole
    Mind filled with power
    Out of control
    Edge of depression
    Broken the seal
    No need for compression
    Nothing can heal
    Roll the karma wheel

"Southampton Dock/The Final Cut" - Pink Floyd

    They disembarked in '45
And no-one spoke and no-one smiled
There were to many spaces in the line.
    Gathered at the cenotaph
All agreed with the hand on heart
    To sheath the sacrificial Knifes.
    But now
    She stands upon Southampton dock
    With her handkerchief
    And her summer frock clings
To her wet body in the rain.
    In quiet desperation knuckles
    White upon the slippery reins
She bravely waves the boys Goodbye again.

And still the dark stain spreads between
    His shoulder blades.
A mute reminder of the poppy fields and graves.
And when the fight was over
We spent what they had made.
But in the bottom of our hearts
    We felt the final cut.

Through the fish eyed lens of tear stained eyes
I can barely define the shape of this moment in time
and far from flying high in clear blue skies
I'm spiralling down to the hole in the ground where I hide

If you negotiate the minefield in the drive
and beat the dogs and cheat the cold electronic eyes
and if you make it past the shotgun in the hall
dial the combination open the priesthole
and if I'm in I'll tell you what's behind the wall
There's a kid who had a big hallucination
making love to girls in magazines
he wonders if you're sleeping with your new found faith
    could anybody love him
or is it just a crazy dream

And if I show you my dark side
will you still hold me tonight?
and if I open my heart to you
and show you my weak side
    what would you do?
would you sell your story to Rolling Stone?
would you take the children away
    and leave me alone?
    and smile in reassurance
as you whisper down the phone
    would you send me packing
or would you take me home?

Thought I ought to bare my naked feelings
Thought I ought to tear the curtain down
I held the blade in trembling hands
prepared to make it but just then the phone rang
I never had the nerve to make the final cut

a reporter stopped me for a interview
she said she's heard stories and she's heard fables
that i'm vicious on the mike and the turntables
this young reporter i did adore
so i rocked a vicious rhyme like i never did before
she said damn fly guy im in love with you
the casanova legend must have been true
i said by the way baby what's your name
said i go by the name of lois lane
and you could be my boyfiend you surely can
just let me quit my boyfriend called superman

    i said he's a fairy i do suppoose
flyin through the air in pantyhose
he may be very sexy or even cute
but he looks like a sucker in a blue and red suit
i said you need a man who's got finesse
and his whole name across his chest
he may be able to fly all through the night
but can he rock a party til the early light
he cant satisfy you with his little worm
but i can bust you out with my super sperm

Scarred By Dream Theater, Lyrics By John Petrucci

    To Rise, To Fall.
    To Hurt, To Hate.
    To Want, To Wait.
    To Heal, To Save.

    Can't hear it
    we fear it
    awareness won't come near it

    Distractive
    Reactive
    Disguised in spite of time

    I never bared my emotion
    My passion always strong
    I never lost my devotion
    but somewhere fate went wrong

Can't let them rape me again
    Your venom's not family here
won't let them fill me with
    fatalistic remedies

What if the rest of the world
    was hopelessly blinded by fear?
    Where would my sanctity live?
    Suddenly nobody cares.

    It's never enough
    You're wasting your time
Isn't there something I could say?
    You don't understand
    You're closing me out
How can we live our lives this way?

    You tell me I'm wrong
    I'm risking my life
Still, I have nothing in return
    I show you my hands
    You don't see the scars
Maybe you'll leave me here to burn.

What if the rest of the world
    was hopelessly drowning in vain?
Where would our self pity run?
    Suddenly everyone cares.

    Blood...Heal me
    Fear...Change me
    Belief will always save me
    Blood...Swearing
    Fear...Staring
    Conviction made aware

    Give up on misery
    Turn your back on dissent
    Leave their distrust behind
    Wash your hands of regret

Do you feel you don't know me anymore?
And do you feel I'm afraid of your love?
And how come you don't want me asking?
And how come my heart's not invited?
You say you want everyone happy
    Well, we're not laughing.

And how come you don't understand me?
And how come I don't understand you?
Thirty years say we're in this together
    So open your eyes.

    People in prayer for me
    everyone there for me
Sometimes I feel I should face this alone
    My soul exposed
It calms me to know that I won't

    Blood...Heal me
    Fear...Change me
    Belief will always save me
    Blood...Swearing
    Fear...Staring
    Conviction made aware

    Give up on misery
    Turn your back on dissent
    Leave their distrust behind
    Wash your hands of regret

    Blood...Heal me
    Fear...Change me
    Belief will always save me
    Blood...Swearing
    Fear...Staring
    Conviction made aware

    Learning from misery
    Staring back at dissent
    Leaving distrust behind
    I'm inspired and content

    "Hallelujah" Leonard Cohen
    As interpreted by Jeff Buckley

Well I heard there was a secret chord
that David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do ya?
Well it goes like this :
The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift
    The baffled king composing Hallelujah

    Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah...

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
And she tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

    Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah...

(Yeah but) Baby I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor, (You know)
I used to live alone before I knew ya
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
and love is not a victory march
    It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

    Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah...

Well there was a time when you let me know
    What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do ya
But remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

    Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah

    Hallelujah...

    [Instrumental]

    Maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
    It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

    Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelu...
    Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelu...
    Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah

    Hallellllluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuujjjaahhhh...Hal lelllluuuuuujjaaaaaaaaaahhhh
"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man."
    George Bernard Shaw
