Default Ike Turner, Rock Pioneer, Ex-Husband of Tina Turner Dead at 76

    Wednesday, December 12, 2007

SAN DIEGO Ike Turner, whose role as one of rock's critical architects was overshadowed by his ogre-like image as the man who brutally abused former wife and rock icon Tina Turner, died Wednesday at his home in suburban San Diego. He was 76.

"He did pass away this morning" at his home in San Marcos, in northern San Diego County, said Scott M. Hanover of Thrill Entertainment Group, which managed Turner's musical career. There was no immediate word on the cause of death.

I'm sorry but whenever I hear that name I always think of Tim Meadows apologizing to Kevin Nealon.

    RIP Ike.

There's no denying his contributions to music, but I have to say I'm no fan of any man who does what he did to Tina.

There's at least one person out there sleeping well tonight knowing he's gone for good.

Turner, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is credited by many rock historians with making the first rock 'n' roll record, "Rocket 88," in 1951.

    RIP Ike Turner

don't cry for poor old tina...if wasn't for the beatings she took, she'd have never had that surge in popularity during the eighties and gone onto become the huge diva she is...Oprah and the rest turned her into a story of triumph...of courage...of one woman's ability to rise above the cancer of spousal abuse to reach the top, not just as a performer but as a woman. Tina's story is one of courage and one that showed us that no one, no matter how rich or talented, is immune to the evils of abuse and hatred.

Give me a break. I mean seriously, all things being equal, no one should hit anyone for any reason. We learn that stuff in kindergarten but we also shouldn't exploit that kind of thing to sell records. What's more, Ike is far from the only music icon who slapped people around. Most everyone on this site and around the music world would get down on their knees and suck Jimi Hendrix's dead cock but he threw his pregnant wife down a flight of stairs. So what...because Jimi died young and had his death over-romanticized he gets a pass but Ike dies of old age after Tina made her millions parlaying her story of triumph over tragedy and he's a devil?

I couldn't care less about Ike Turner. That clip showed he played a mean piano and he's certainly a very significant figure in rock and roll history so don't think I'm sticking up for Ike necessarily, I'm just pointing out what I deem to be a double standard.
