    Default The Van Halen/Marillion comparison

I've always thought both bands' careers had something in common.

First singer bombastic frontman with a strong personality but not a technical singer. Quits in the middle of the Eighties after their most successful album to pursue a solo career. They hire a new singer, more melodic and more of a technical singer, a guy who was an established solo artist prior to joining the band. Some longtime fans say the band has gone vanilla, compromising what was perceived as their core identity. The new incarnation of the band proves more successful than the departed original singer's solo career. They release a greatest hits record named "Best of Both Worlds" with both singers' contributions.

They create a fantastic web site... oh wait, that's where the similarities end, Marillion has an awesome web site while VH's sucks!

    A brief introduction to Marillion:

    Incommunicado

    Kayleigh

    Sugar Mice

    With second singer Steve Hogarth:

    Easter

    Hooks In You

    Neverland

you'll notice the second guy has a higher voice and sings about love more, reminds u of sumethin??

Yes, their former singer was named Fish - he had a different name than DLR, I agree that's a major difference...

I do remember their song Kayleigh but haven't heard it since it was on mTV. Surprised they're still around.

how foreign and strange. I saw the madrid concerts and remember back when I lived there for years. Often I ran into these subcultures so distinct from the U.S. music. I guess they are like Yes, Rush and Genesis. all bands I find to be quite strange. It's like nerd rock or sophisticated metal. wierd.
If eddie were down and out on a sidewalk playing guitar I'd be next to him with a bottle and a blanky braving the cold. I would be sucking my thumb happily making chupa chupa noises in sync with the petroglyphic sounds that came from the mighty finger tips of Edward Van Halen.

The only connection I see is that Van Halen is my favorite band and my ex-girlfriend loved Marillion.

The first singer sounded alot like, looked alot like Phil Collins in the first video! The only thing I could see them being like Vh, is that they picked up a new lead singer! Other that that Vh kicked ass, and they didn't!

How ironic! At the first two Van Halen shows of this tour, I just couldn't get it out of my head how much Van Halen and Marillion are so similar. It was a constant distraction and I could hardly concentrate. There must have been 20 other people I talked to at those shows who said the same thing.

    Not.

What... The.... Fuck??? I've heard a lot of stupid comparisons, but this ranks right up there at the top. Some of you people are on fucking drugs.
We train dogs for cattle and sheep herding. They're very different. Sheep are a lot like supermodels - they bunch together, they rattle very easily. Cattle are like drunks at a hockey game - two will want to fight: "Who are you and what's with your badge?"

Two of them will be like: "Leave them alone, let's go see the game." Another one is lost: "Where'd you guys go?" The dog has to deal with all of that. You work them off a whistle. It's the original video game.

I have no idea who the hell that band is.

Wow! I never thought of this! Marillion is pretty good stuff...the "Best Of Both Worlds" thing is the only comparison to VH I ever made.

Let's not forget that Dave had an coke dealer named Lincoln, while Marillion's bus driver (Dave) once stopped in Lincoln (NE) for a Coke.

The main similarity is how fans of the original Marillion think that the band was better with Fish and sold out with second singer Steve Hogarth. So the HISTORY of the band has a lot of things in common with VH. And the fans of both bands often behave the same way.

Of course they do not SOUND like VH, any idiot can notice that.

I'm amazed that anyone in the US has heard of Marillion.

As a band, they come from a very different spiritual place than VH.

But the similarity that LD draws is there. All attention was on the frontman as they became bloated into '87 with the Clautching At Straws tour. The band imploded, people thought it would be Fish that survived.

Here we are in 2007. Marillion are still so popular that their fans willingly finance each album, the quality and consistency of which is to be admired. They keep developing as a band and selling out tours while Fish scrambles around for work of any kind.

So as of 1995, I would have said the paths of VH and Marillion were very similar. Of course, after that, the VH coma began and the rest is history.

For me, Marillion became better after Fish, VH didn't after Dave.

What is also strange is that I thought I lot of Edward's playing from 'Me Wise' onwards started to resemble Steve Rothery's especially on things like From Afrar and YTTD.

I'd be surprised is Ed is aware of Rothery though. Maybe he is though, he started sounding like Bettencourt on Without You and claimed he hadn't heard an Extreme record.
