guess it depends on your criteria...mercury had the best voice out of the bunch by far and away...plant was a perfect combination of sexuality, quasi-spirituality and norse rock god, roth has the most underappreciated and overlooked voice and lyrical talent and was the most incredible physical specimen rock and roll has ever seen and jagger got the whole ball rolling to begin with...so it's a real toss up but I do think these would be the top four, no doubt...

Greatest frontmen. I'm always a sucker for a good list, so here are my top 10..

    1. Mick Jagger
    2. Robert Plant
    3. Roger Daltrey
    4. DLR
    5. Freddie Mercury
    6. Steven Tyler
    7. Axl Rose
    8. Lennon/McCartney - the reason they're so low is because they had one another, neither was a frontman on his own. Hope that makes sense!
    9. Ozzy Osbourne
    10. Sammy Hagar

Are we talking singers, or front men?

    1. DLR
    2. Tyler
    3. Plant
    4. Hagar
    5. Halford

I guess most of it depends on which era you grew up in.

I always combine it. You get points for the voice and stage presence. I can't believe I forgot Jim Morrison. I would like to revise my list and put Jimbo 5th, knocking everyone down a notch. Sorry Sammy, that puts you out of my top 10. So now its...

    1. Jagger
    2. Plant
    3. Daltrey

    5. Morrison
    6. Mercury

Just to make this a little more complicated, narrow it down to your top five "best singers" in rock vs. the top five "frontmen or showmen" in rock. When i think of it that way, my two lists are totally different. My top five rock singers would be as follows:

    1. Geoff Tate- Queensryche
    2. Bobby Kimball- Toto
    3. Steve Perry- Journey
    4. Bruce Dickenson- Iron Maiden
    5. Myles Kennedy- Alterbridge

That works just fine for me.

My top 10 would probably read as follows...

    1. Mick Jagger
    2. Freddie Mercury
    3. Robert Plant
    4. David Lee Roth
    5. Bon Scott
    6. Bono
    7. W. Axl Rose
    8. Roger Daltrey
    9. Steven Tyler
    10. Jim Morrison

    Other notable frontmen:

    Ozzy Osbourne
    Ronnie James Dio
    Brian Johnson
    Bruce Dickinson
    Sammy Hagar
    Paul Rodgers
    Rob Halford
    Jimmy Barnes
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

I'd rather do my own top five

    1.Mercury
    2.Tyler
    3.Roth
    4.Rose
    5.Scott

I don't see what makes Robert Plant such a great frontman

There would be no Frontmen list without Robert Plant....PERIOD....Him and Jim Morrison...

    My list would go:

    1. Plant
    2. Tyler (or Morrison)
    3. Mercury
    4. Roth
    5. Ozzy

    uh...don't forget PAul Stanley...
whatever you may think of KI$$ as a band (or a business)
you can't deny that Stanley makes one hell of a frontman.

I'm not talking lyrics or musical ability or vocal range,
    I'm talking about frontman-ism...

This guy has been handling arena/stadium size audiences
    for over 3 friggin decades...

Come up with any category by which you'd measuure a 'frontman'
and tell me he isn't one of the best.

I usually don't participate in lists but you got me thinking, so here goes.
I'm basing it purely on what I've seen when attending concerts, all seen while in their prime. It turned out in chronological order for a reason.

    1. Jagger - only because he really started the flamboyant frontman thing
    2. Plant - the rise of the true rock GOD
    3. Peter Gabriel - the rise of performance art. He acted out his songs, and could make even an arena intimate
    4. Johnny Rotten - the eyes, the sneer, the contempt for others while making the audience his co-conspirators
    5. My beloved Axl Rose - took bits and pieces from others, with a reverence. and made it what he thought it should be, making it his own.

Freddie Mercury and Bono also belong in this list, but I ran out of room.
