    Default Ibanez Artcore Pickup Recommendations

    Hi All:

I am of course turning to the folks here for advice on replacement pickups for my Ibanez Artcore hollow body. I bought this guitar a year ago after playing a couple and thinking they were comfortable. A year later I still like the way the guitar plays and have decided to do some upgrades to it make it more playable in both studio and live settings. I'm going to replace the pickups (undecided, hence this thread), potentiometers, tuners (have a Schaller M6 set standing by), and nut (bone).

I've been really getting into the Guitar Fetish website (http://store.guitarfetish.com/) and might go with a set of their pickups since the options are plentiful and the prices are roughly one-third to half of Seymour Duncan and DiMarzio. (I only spent $185 on the guitar.) I want to go with humbuckers and something that'll be similar to a 335, and have been considering the GFS Dream 180s (http://store.guitarfetish.com/dr180vihuwhp.html) and the Vintage 59s (http://store.guitarfetish.com/v59niclalpah.html). Any thoughts/suggestions? What experiences have you guys had, if any, with GFS pickups? I bought a set of the GFS Boutique FAT PAFs for my new Strat but have yet to complete that guitar.

I'm also open to other ideas/suggestions if y'all have any.

    Thanks!

First suggestion: you need more guitars.

Second suggestion: I've played my buddy's homemade hollow-body with GFS pickups, although I'm not I'm not sure what model. They sounded pretty decent. Tons of heart and very warm.

If you can find a set of Ibanez Super 58 pickups... That would be ideal.

Should I stick SD 59s in there and call it a day? Would Seth Lovers be closer? I'm hoping to use it for more than just rock, so it should offer up some of the same tonal varieties that a 335 does.

Right now I'm leaning toward the Dream 180s for the Artcore--mostly because I really want to put 59s in a thinline Strat I'm building.

And these Retrotrons, though sold out right now, might be SUPER COOL if I wanted to do a Rickenbacker thing: http://store.guitarfetish.com/meal2ritovij.html. Maybe that's the way to go (?).

i bought some epiphone paf type pickups for a cheap hollowbody a while ago (from ebay, taken from an epi les paul) and i tell ya i was very impressed, the great thing was they only cost me £15 ! and they totaly transformed the guitar....really warm bluesy kinda feel, so i would suggest a set of those or you could try my other favourite (as im sure ive said before when you've asked about pups) the sd pearly gates.

I think I'm doing this. I have SO many dual-humbucker guitars and a couple with P-90s, this will be a way to make it offer something different.

Could have something to do with me having to transcribe about nine Tom Petty songs yesterday...

Ahhhh, yes. The unbelievably tasteful and underrated Mike Campbell can have that effect...
