Happy Hanukkah to our Jewish friends and...I need some advice.

So, we're going to visit some friends for the weekend and she is Jewish (he is Christian). Since I'm not very versed in Jewish traditions/etiquette I was hoping someone here might be able to help me. Is gift giving a tradition during Hanukkah? I'd like to take them a Hanukkah/Christmas/house warming gift but don't want to come off like an idiot if that's inappropriate. If it's NOT inappropriate, what type of gift would be good? I just don't want to break any etiquette rules. They also have a 2-yr. old son I was going to get a little gift for. If anyone could help me out, I'd appreciate it.

nothing wrong with gift giving during channukah...though not part of the original traditions, jews in the united states began gift giving during the holiday so that their kids wouldn't feel left out while watching their gentile friends getting xmas presents. Some families give small gifts each day and then one big gift on the final day etc etc...especially now, with so many mixed marriages, like mine, my wife is christian, a lot of these homes have christmas trees as well as a menorah during this time of year. Basically tis the season for gift giving, whether you're christian or not. Obviously Christmas has taken on an entirely secular vibe over the past several years and people of all faiths tend to get into that spirit. I wouldn't expect it to break any rules by you taking their family a gift or two...quite the contrary, seems like it would be a very nice gesture and very appropriate given the season, the fact that they have a child and that they've just moved into a home and the fact that they have a mixed marriage as well.
