WooHoo, I Is Kontinyuing My Kowlej Ejukayshun!

So last night I'm poking around the net and bring up the Community College (Monterey Peninsula College) and decide, just for fun, to register.

Today they e-mail me my student number and so - for fun - I click on the online registration and sign up for three classes: Spanish 1A, Communications 5 and Oceanography (I need an easy science class). Then it says to enter my credit card #, so I do and the next thing I know I'm a freakin' college student again. 12 units = $274...dayamn. That's not counting books. Anyway, I'm kind of excited because this is the first time I've approached education as an adult and I feel like I'm in control ; which is unlike when I went as a young person and I felt like I was being forced and everything was a big joke.

Anyway, this is going to be fun.

I dunno...I took two years off after high school before I entered community college. I guess one could say that I entered as an adult. I was still working and going to classes, yet I honestly believe that I held an appreciation for what I was doing with more cognizance. Certainly more than the dolts that I was surrounded by, two years younger and completely vacuous about any true goals.

Thing is, I ran out of money, changed jobs and wound up in the auto parts industry for 17 years. I hold a B.A. in communications, highlight journalism.

With that and a hose, may I wash your car, sir?

Congratulations on the new scholastic (ad)venture! Can't wait to see the graduation picture (the tassel goes to the left, I think.)

I hated my first and second years of college. I was really down on the fact that, in order to get a degree, I had to take all these courses I was sure I'd never use. I took a year off between my sophomore and junior years because I was sure I needed experience in the world, rather than in a classroom. After the 7th or 8th rejection from editors who told me to "return with that sheepskin" I went back to campus. This time I took classes I wanted to take. I was heavily into punk music at the time. So, because of the band "The Gang Of Four" I took Chinese History. The Clash were into reggae, I took "Caribbean Studies." Modern English Literature was a must for my love of the Jam.

It was the best year and a half of my college career

I'm a big proponent of "do what you love.".

Hey Axx...I just went back to school this semester. It's challenging (esp. after being OUT of college for the past 12yrs. and working) but I'm enjoying it so far. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on the way you look at it) I've got 150 college hours so far, so since my core is complete all I needed was upper-level advanced major and minor courses. I say unfortunately b/c I would've like to have started back taking some lower-level fresh. and soph. level courses to get my feet wet again. I'm doing well, however,

Oceanography, huh? Well, try to find some reviews for the course. I took this back in 1992 at Texas A&M and it was REALLLLLLLLLLLLY hard. I somehow pulled a "C" in the class but it took everything I had to make that. Now, it might be a little easier at a community college, I don't know...but try not to go into it thinking it's gonna be a blow-off course b/c at many colleges it is NOT. There's a great website called "Rate your professors" (www.ratemyprofessors.com). You can pull up your college and browse the instructors for ratings by previous students. It's very helpful when registering for classes!

Sounds like you're getting a good deal, though, on tuition. At U of H, my classes are costing me $473 per course...that's just the course tuition and does not include fees. My total fee bill for next semester was about $3,000!

Good luck on this new adventure---I'm sure you'll do great and enjoy it!

Have fun with it! The best thing about being an adult student is that you're there for your own satisfaction. There's no one else you need to please, and that includes your instructors.

    Very cool!

My wife is finishing up her first semester of her Master's degree. She's a stressed out nut job right now There's three more papers to write, one due this Tuesday.

I'd love to go back but would have no clue what to pursue, I too have a BA in Journalism and certainly would want to structure a program so that I could get out of that field. Maybe a business degree.

Culinary school would seem fun, but then again I'd only want to cook at home not a restaurant. Unless we move back to VT and open a bed and breakfast. I understand there's a shortage of those in New England

    Good luck Axx,

In the immortal words of Homer as he lit his h.s. diploma, "Well, I won't be needing this anymore. I am so smart, I am so smart, S-M-R-T, I mean S-M-A-R-T." I did the same thing a few years ago. My work pays for you to go to school, but it has to be something beneficial to the casino (i.e. I can't go back for a pre-med degree). I took a few classes and found them interesting. It felt odd being older and an adult. I took history and found that interesting-had a french guy teaching American history, didn't figure that out. We went over Regan's assassination and things that happened in the 80's-things that the other people in the class had no idea about, yet I recalled happening. I pulled A's in all my classes-amazing what happens when you go to class and actually study. I wasn't able to go back though-scheduling w/work and farming stuff.

I have a strong Marine Science backround, my grandfather moved to Monterey back in 1928 to set up Hopkins Marine Station for Stanford University. That's how he met Ed "Doc" Ricketts (of Steinbeck fame, through Doc, he met Steinbeck), they met while Tide-Pooling.

I know this sounds cynical but regardless off what people think about climate change the fact is that it's going to be big buisness and big $$$$$, especially out here on the Pacific Coast. I might as well put some of that $$$$ in MY pocket .

I was always at a disadvantage because in my late teens and early 20s I didn't drive. That meant that I took the bus or rode with friends. The idea that I can come and go as I please gives me a level of control and instead of worring about making the bus I can focus on class. Best part is that the collge is about three blocks away and I can park at my workplace and walk which means I can save $40 on parking (which I will probably cave in on when it starts to rain).

Amazon has a deal about used textbooks that I will also look into so I can save money.

Spanish will be cool, I'm great at learning languages ( I took German and Arabic and while I can sorta still speak German my Arabic is down to "Don't shoot me, I'm not Israeli". Still, I was an A student in those classes) and Spanish just makes sense in California. It might also come in handy if I meet Adriana Lima as well.

Communications is just a lark. I have so many friends who've either worked or interned at the local CBS station that I just have to give that a shot. What the hell, right?
