    Default Evel is dead

Legendary motorcycle stuntman Evel Knievel died Friday, according to evelknievel.com (CNN)

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - Evel Knievel, the hard-living motorcycle daredevil whose exploits made him an international icon in the 1970s, died Friday. He was 69.

Knievel's death was confirmed by his granddaughter, Krysten Knievel. He had been in failing health for years, suffering from diabetes and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable condition that scarred his lungs.

Knievel had undergone a liver transplant in 1999 after nearly dying of hepatitis C, likely contracted through a blood transfusion after one of his bone-shattering spills.

The death of a legend. Who would of thought he would pass quietly after his career path? A true american through and through and great source of inspiration to be better, bigger, faster, and everything the US was and is today.

    RIP

My mom gave me a reissued version of the Evel Knievel stunt cycle set for Christmas a couple of years ago. Looks like I'm breaking that out and having little Evel attempt some death defying jumps in my basement tonight.

    RIP Evel.

Evel Knievel was a Rock star to me before I knew what a Rock star was. When I was a kid, I had the toy motorcycle, lunch box, t-shirt, the works. When I got into BMX bikes, I was jumping over anything I could, pretending to be jumping the Snake River or the Las Vegas fountain, pretending to be EK. Many a bruise and scrape I incurred but what fun. He was the original "Extreme" thrill junkie. There goes a big icon of my youth.

He caught some ridicule for his recent conversion to Christianity but I look at his conversion as a good thing in that he was obviously looking to lead a better lifestyle, perhaps thinking that the end was near but I felt "more power to him". I hope he passed in peace. A legend indeed.

    Where was Kanye?!?

Never was much of a daredevil when I was a kid (or now), but I was always interested to see what Evel was going to try to jump next. I wish that Snake River Canyon deal had worked. A big part of the '70s has moved on. Thanks for the memories, Evel. Godspeed and Rest in Peace.

When I was a kid he was the craziest mofo I'd ever seen! Remember the botched Snake River Canyon attempt in a steam-powered rocket/motorcycle thingy?

Too bad that so many of his later years were spent sick and in pain. Sorry to see him gone. We won't see the likes of him again!

"“We had a lot of fun on the tour – Dave was a blast. And next time we go out, we’re going to have some new stuff, too. I’m looking forward to getting on it. I’ve got tons of music written, such a variety of stuff… Actually, next week or the week after, Wolfie, Alex, and I are gonna start jamming. Maybe we’ll give Dave a call and see what he’s up to.” - Edward Van Halen ~ 2009
