Study says Latinos feel language skills can lead to discrimination
English proficiency grows in subsequent generations

Norwich, Conn. - Foreign- and native-born Latinos cite language skills as the top reason for discrimination against them, according to a nationwide, multi-year survey of more than 14,000 foreign- and native-born Latinos released Thursday by the Pew Hispanic Center.

But, the report said, English reading and speaking patterns of the generations following foreign-born arrivals generally trace the same course as previous immigrant populations that came to the United States.

Ahhhhh. The Golden Llama of S. Florida. Wasn't that one of the scrapped titles for an Indiana Jones flick?

I'll get annoyed by latin immigrants not learning english quickly or well enough when people whose families have lived in the United States for thousands of years learn to do so. I can hardly understand what half the mumbling mush-mouths around Houston are saying and THEY have the nerve to bitch about people from Mexico...

You're not alone. It's the same way in Arizona, southern California and, to an increasing extent, in New York as well.

I'm sorry, I have no problem with Spanish people, but it does drive me nuts when they shout at their kids in Spanish all game at the little league games. I don't know - I know their kids all know English as they go to the same schools as mine, and I know the parents know English as well as I've spoken with many of them - so why? I would think it would be more confusing to the kid to have the coach yelling "slide" and the parent yelling "diapositiva" (or whatever it is they yell) at the same time.

My dad told me that my grandmother (whose family spoke French) considered it rude for her family to speak French to her when my English-speaking grandfather was around.
