Default Oops, Teacher arrested for insulting Islam

This is on the BBC here in the UK at the moment....................

    'Muhammad' teddy teacher arrested

Gillian Gibbons had been working in Khartoum since August
A British school teacher has been arrested in Sudan accused of insulting Islam's Prophet, after she allowed her pupils to name a teddy bear Muhammad.
Colleagues of Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, said she made an "innocent mistake" by letting the six and seven-year-olds choose the name.

Ms Gibbons was arrested after several parents made complaints.

A spokesman from the British Embassy in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, said it was unclear whether she had been charged.

Embassy officials are expected to visit Mrs Gibbons in custody on Monday.

The BBC's correspondent Amber Henshaw said Ms Gibbons' punishment could be up to six months in jail, 40 lashes or a fine.

The school has been closed until January for fear of reprisals.

    'Very sensitive'

Fellow teachers at Khartoum's Unity High School told Reuters news agency they feared for Ms Gibbons' safety after receiving reports that men had started gathering outside the police station where she was being held.

The school's director, Robert Boulos, said: "This is a very sensitive issue. We are very worried about her safety.

They came up with eight names including Abdullah, Hassan and Muhammad

    Robert Boulos
    Director of Unity High School

"This was a completely innocent mistake. Miss Gibbons would have never wanted to insult Islam."

Mr Boulos said Ms Gibbons was following a British national curriculum course designed to teach young pupils about animals and this year's topic was the bear.

So Ms Gibbons, who joined the school in August, asked a seven-year-old girl to bring in her teddy bear and asked the class to pick names for it, he said.

"They came up with eight names including Abdullah, Hassan and Muhammad," Mr Boulos said.

"Then she explained what it meant to vote and asked them to choose the name."

Twenty out of the 23 children chose Muhammad as their favourite name.

Mr Boulos said each child was then allowed to take the bear home at weekends and told to write a diary about what they did with it.

He said the children's entries were collected in a book with a picture of the bear on the cover and a message which read, "My name is Muhammad."

The bear itself was not marked or labelled with the name in any way, he added.

It is seen as an insult to Islam to attempt to make an image of the Prophet Muhammad.

    Book seized

Mr Boulos said Ms Gibbons was arrested on Sunday at her home inside the school premises after a number of parents complained to Sudan's Ministry of Education.

Cartoons of the Prophet led to protests around the world in 2006

He said police had seized the book and asked to interview the girl who owned the bear.

The country's state-controlled Sudanese Media Centre reported that charges were being prepared "under article 125 of the criminal law" which covers insults against faith and religion.

No-one at the ministries of education or justice was available for comment.

One Muslim teacher at the school, who also has a child in Ms Gibbons' class, said she had not found the project offensive.

"I had no problem with it at all," the teacher said.

"I know Gillian and she would never have meant it as an insult. I was just impressed that she got them to vote."

Unity is an independent school for Christian and Muslim children and is governed by a board representing major Christian denominations in Sudan.

Cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad printed in several European newspapers sparked violent protests around the world in 2006.
A man could lose himself in a country like this.

...but you can name your kid Muhammad and send him out with explosives strapped on him to blow up in the midst of a crowd of "infidels". Go figure...

The real crime was that the poor teddy bear was named after a pedophile... If people can be named after the "prophet", why can't a stuffed animal? I'm sure humans named "Mohammed" have done more to dishonor his legacy of, er, peace and tolerance than a teddy bear. Not that I worry about understanding the driving force and logic of hate/religion/terrorism.

My friends, we are in the presence of greatness: The greatest school prank ever!
Back in my day all we could think to do was stick a piece of chalk in the blackboard erasers, or maybe put a thumbtack on her chair. But, to trick your teacher into getting forty lashes under Islamic law?!? I bow to the masters!

("Okay, everybody vote for naming the bear "Muhammad". Oh my God, she fell for it! This is gonna' be great!")

    Funny. Distasteful. But Funny.

These people are really messed up. They have zero common sense. But then again, we have people here trying to get teachers to teach Sunday school creationism in science class, so I guess everyone has their stupid rednecks. Over there, they're more like brownnecks, but you get the point.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

As much as I hate to say it, there are many places in the world that civilized people just shouldn't go to. This would be one of those places.

I posted this because i was interested to hear some reactions to this news.

btw, I agree pretty much completely with every opinion here.

I was just thinking as to how this happened and perhaps some ulterior motives, disregarding the obvious ones.

First, did an over zealous parent bring this to the attention of the authorities when little abdul went home with the bear? A muslim teacher said she wasn't offended and at worst it was an honest mistake. Was this a parent of influence who didn't want their child being "corrupted"?

Second, we all know the problems in Sudan at present, especially with regard the janjaweed (sp) militias. Is this just making an example of someone to show how serious they are?

and third, re the militia bit and the present little troubles there, could this teacher possibly be being used as some kind of bargaining chip? Give us some money/aid/leeway and we spare the woman etc.

Just a few idle thoughts as I sit back and open another can of mooby-hammered special draft 5.5% export.

(I hope the above comment doesn't get me a fatwa or a Kevin Smith law suit)

    Unbelievable:

    'Teddy' teacher jailed in Sudan

KHARTOUM, Sudan (CNN) -- A court in Sudan on Thursday found a British teacher guilty of inciting religious hatred by allowing her class to name a teddy bear "Mohammed" and sentenced her to 15 days in prison and deportation, CNN has confirmed.

The court in Khartoum ordered Gillian Gibbons, 54, to be incarcerated in the city's Omdurman women's prison, her defense lawyer said, adding that the verdict was "disappointing" and they would be mounting an appeal.

Journalist Andrew Heavens said the appeal would probably take at least 15 days to mount.

Gibbons was detained earlier this week when she asked her class of 7-year-olds to name the toy as part of a school project, Robert Boulos, the head of Unity High School, told CNN. Watch latest developments in the case. »

She was ushered into the courthouse earlier through a crowd of reporters by Sudanese police earlier in the day. She looked somber and dazed and was dressed in a black blazer and light blue skirt.

UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband called Gibbons' actions an "innocent misunderstanding," following a meeting with the Sudanese Ambassador to Britain, Omer Siddig, who was summoned to the Foreign Office in London.

"I explained to him that we were very concerned by the case. We believe that this was an innocent misunderstanding," he said in a statement released after the meeting.

"The Sudanese ambassador undertook to ensure our concerns were relayed to Khartoum at the highest level. He also said he would reflect back to Khartoum the real respect for the Islamic religion in this country," the statement added.

Boulos told CNN Wednesday that the complaint about Gibbons' actions came from a staff member at the school, not from a parent as originally thought.

Speaking outside the court, Boulos said a letter from Sudan's Ministry of Education claimed that parents had raised concerns over the naming of the bear. He said he did not know who was responsible, but was "horrified" when he found out it was a member of his own staff.

Defense counsel later confirmed that the complaint came from Sarah Khawad, a secretary at the school. The counsel, who did not give his name, said the hearing had been delayed as it waited for Khawad to arrive at court to give her evidence.

British consular staff and Gibbons' defense team were at first refused access to the court by Sudanese police.

The defense lawyer was later allowed in to see his client but came out after 30 minutes and told reporters the hearing had been adjourned while judges waited for the prosecution team to arrive.

On the first floor of the courthouse, around 25 police linked arms and forced journalists and British officials away from the court entrance. Police detained some journalists, and confiscated a camera belonging to a freelance CNN cameraman.

Four vans filled with riot police were waiting outside the courthouse, but there were no signs of street disturbances or protests. Staff from Gibbons' school, including Boulos, were present. They refused to comment on their colleague's predicament.

The charges against Gibbons were announced Wednesday in Arabic on by state-run news agency.

Although there is no ban in the Quran on images of Allah or the Prophet Mohammed, likenesses are considered highly offensive by Muslims.

Gibbons has been working at the school -- popular with wealthy Sudanese and expatriates -- since August, after leaving her position as deputy head teacher at a primary school in Liverpool this summer, said Boulos.

He said Gibbons asked the children to pick their favorite name for the new class mascot, which she was using to aid lessons about animals and their habitats.

Being deported? Sounds like a blessing for her.

If I were her, I would eat the gassiest food possible, then right before I leave the country, let the out the smelliest, most vomit-inducing fart I can muster in the direction of the people escorting me.

I always get the last laugh.

Woah. It must be really tall...

Anyways, I think the ulterior motive here is not so much that she was insulting islam, but encouraging democracy through voting for the Teddy's name. That's the sneaky little truth here. Surely, she is truly a threat to society.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, ...

but words must be WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION!!!!!!!!!

    Gimme a break.

Okay, it's time to start the first NAME HALL OF FAME. We'll basically set it up so that names are like retired numbers in sports. A Yankee can no longer wear the number 3 (Babe Ruth). A Laker can no longer wear the number 32 (Magic Johnson).

AND NO ONE OR THING CAN EVER BE NAMED AFTER RELIGIOUS SAVIORS!

There, it's settled. What name goes into The Hall next?
