    Opeth +++ The Official Thread

    This is the official Opeth thread. Hopefully, there are a few Opeth fans out there.

    +++ +++ +++

    The Roundhouse Tapes came out today. This band has skills to play what they play live and to make it sound as good.

    Opeth rocks my socks. It's amazing how well Mikhail can switch from Death to Clean vox virtually effortlessly.

    Yeah, and his death vox is so friggin' bad ass. It's amazing how much better Mike's clean vox today than on Morningrise. You can really tell that his confidence level in his singing has increased as time has passed.

    Big Opeth fan myself- seen them in concert back in 2003 OR 2004 (can't remember now what year it was)... They played at "The Penny Arcade" that year in Rochester NY.

    GREAT show!

    They are an amazing band, very technically skilled.

    My favorite records of theirs would be "Still Life" at number one, followed by "Ghost Reveries" which I felt was a very strong effort from them.

    I have noticed they started out as a Heavy Metal Band, with Prog-Rock influences.....and of late they sometimes feel like a Prog-Rock band with Heavy Metal influences.. (heh)

    (this is NO knock on them-- simply an observation from a long-time fan)

    Every time Opeth has come close to me I'm either:
    a) Deployed to the wonderful Middle East, or
    b) At my Grandma's funeral (this only happened once)

    Last summer, Opeth rips through OK City on the GiganTour and I GOT SICK! I was so pissed! I heard they tore it up, though, from some 15 year old girl from my church.

    Next time they come here - or even to Dallas or Tulsa, for that matter - I will be there...or else.

    Opeth fan here! I have tickets to see them in September. I like the new album but Blackwater Park still remains my favorite. Watershed is a bit more of a prog effort than their previous albums but still amazing.

    Hell yeah, I saw them a few times this year. I love Watershed, but I still think Ghost Reveries and Still Life are their best.

    So, Hollywood...how'd you get into Opeth? What's your story?

    Can't wait for the Royal Albert Hall DVD!

    21-Jul-2010
    As part of the ongoing celebration of their 20th anniversary, Swedish progressive metallers OPETH will release live footage and audio from the band's recent performance at London's famed Royal Albert Hall. "In Live Concert at the Royal Albert Hall", due on September 21 via Roadrunner Records, is a fierce testament to OPETH's continued success in the progressive metal community.

    Twenty years and nine records into their legendary career, OPETH's "progressively creative spirit" (ARTISTdirect) remains unwavering, propelling the band through the "Evolution XX: An Opeth Anthology" tour, which brought the Swedish titans to six of the world's most unique venues, and now, with the release of "In Live Concert At The Royal Albert Hall", into the homes of their fans.

    The performance at the Royal Albert Hall (recorded on April 5, 2010) includes two sets, the first consisting of the band performing 2000's now-classic, breakthrough epic "Blackwater Park" in its entirety, and the second, a chronologically arranged selection of material from the rest of OPETH's extensive catalogue, totalling almost three hours of music. It is, like the rest of OPETH's greatest work, "purposefully warped in all the right places" (Decibel). The front cover artwork concept pays tribute to DEEP PURPLE's "Concerto for Group and Orchestra", underlining the band's longstanding love for their prog-rock roots.

    Thinking back to the concert, frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt says "OPETH had a magical night playing the Royal Albert Hall. It was a dream come true, and now afterwards, it still feels like a dream. We got it all on film, and this, our third live recording and DVD, might be my personal favourite.

    "One couldn't help to think of all the fantastic artists that played there over the years. Looking back at this night of celebration brings me fond memories of our 20th anniversary — this package is the delayed birthday present."

    The release will be available as three very special configurations:

    01. Limited-edition vinyl box set, which includes:
    * Double-DVD set of OPETH's performance at the legendary Royal Albert Hall, in its entirety, including bonus features.
    * A set of four 180-gram LPs of the concert's live audio in its entirety. The vinyl is housed in black poly lined inner sleeves which are packaged as two double gatefold set with exclusive artwork. Vinyl only available in this box set.
    * Exclusive, numbered lithograph with artwork designed by Mikael Åkerfeldt and long time OPETH designer Travis Smith.
    * 20-page, LP sized booklet printed on coated paper stock that chronicles the night's events in photos.
    * Expanded, exclusive artwork and more.
    02. Five-disc set that consists of two DVDs and three CDs. The set not only includes the legendary evening captured on video, but the concert's live audio in its entirety as well.
    03. Double-DVD set of OPETH's performance at the legendary Royal Albert Hall, in its entirety, including bonus features.

    The concert feature will have 5.1 Dolby Surround, produced and mixed by Jens Bogren on all three configurations. The bonus features consist of a 45 minute ´fan questions´ interview and 45 minute documentary named ´On Tour with Opeth´.

    Track listing is as follows:

    Set 1
    * The Leper Affinity
    * Bleak
    * Harvest
    * The Drapery Falls
    * Dirge For November
    * The Funeral Portrait
    * Patterns In The Ivy
    * Blackwater Park

    Set 2
    * Forest Of October
    * Advent
    * April Ethereal
    * The Moor
    * Wreath
    * Hope Leaves
    * Harlequin Forest
    * The Lotus Eater

    For people who haven't heard much of Opeth, they should check out Bridge of Sighs, it's a cover of Robin Trower. Do we have a Robin Trower thread too?

    I own 2 of their albums Blackwater Park and Damnation. (bought them like 7 years ago)

    They are great musicians for sure but something about them ....I don't know how to explain it since i am a fan of progressive music just seems kinda drawn out .

    They are great live though.

    [QUOTE=Metal Marc;1287455]So, Hollywood...how'd you get into Opeth? What's your story?

    Hey Marc,
    I'm not even sure how it happened!!! Some dude that used to make my morning coffee mentioned them to me one day. I think it was probably after Ghost Reveries came out. I always had them in the back of my mind and then read an article when they toured Oz late last year. I missed the show, but grabbed Watershed and GR and now I'm hooked! Will definitely seek out the older albums soon and look forward to catching them live sometime.

    I love the fact that they don't seem afraid to write a great song whether it's as heavy as hell or something soft and beautiful like Coil. That was the first song I ever heard and I thought maybe I had misunderstood what Swedish Progressive Death Metal meant!!! Haha!! Soon enough the Lotus Eater set me straight and once the song broke down to that cool guitar groove to fade the song out I was in love!! Awesome!!!!!!
