I'd be interested to see how accurate and reliable it is. Gibson must've hired someone on the outside with a sense of humor

That's the first I've seen Bart Walsh ( the instruction video) since he and Dave had a falling out.

That's pretty awesome. I wonder how long it will work.

About 15 years ago I was working in a music store, and we were authorized Gibson dealers. The rep brought this automatic tuner by to show it off. After it broke 3 strings by tuning them all wayyyyy sharp, he sheepishly put it away and went on with the next part of his bullshit spiel. You had to be there. Funny shit.

If this really works...it will revolutionize the guitar industry. No more tuners...no more worrying about intonation problems and no more having several guitars tuned to different tunings...

This blows the VG strat away in my opinion.

I wonder what the price of this thing is...I also wonder how it sounds which is the most important thing...

Well, just off the top of my head, I'd rather have the VG. One, it's $1699, whereas I can't imagine Gibson pricing this less than $3500. Two, the VG not only allows altrenate tunings, but different guitar models as well, including acoustic and 12 string options (which sound damn good), as well as an LP setting, and a Tele setting.

Also, if all of the Roland electronics go out on you in the middle of a show, you still have a fully functioning American Strat.

And it's $500 cheaper. Also, I'd have to know what happens to the tuners when the robotics go out...

The one thing with this guitar is you can override and tweek the tunings it serves up. To my ears... most guitars I tend to tune the B & high E just a hair flat which probably is due to using medium jumbo frets and how much pressure I apply when fretting.

The thing with bot this and the VG strat though is I don't see any options for calibration of their tuning system. What happens when the sensors deviate outside the correct range?

The upside to the Gibson is it's changing the actual string tunings... which gives you the actual feel and tone. The VG is doing this electronically which lack the tension feel and tone since the strings aren't vibrating at the true frequency of the tuning. As I've found with everything digital and solid state... it approximates the real deal but always is just slightly off enough to be noticable.

I don't know... this seems like a novelty thing on both this and the VG. Electronic tuners are cheap... good ears are even cheaper. Golly gee your guitar can tune itself and direct you in intonation... great but for an extra $500 bucks it ain't going to make you a better guitar player. Just save you 2 minutes of tuning time... Too big of price IMO.

I got to try out a robot guitar today.

It tunes very well. Six preset tunings and some room for user tunings. I think they're going to sell for around $2500.

I was a little disappointed that it took about thirty seconds to retune the guitar and that it cut off the output while it was tuning. I was hoping to be able to whang the strings in 'Open E' and have it transform to 'Open G' while it was ringing. No dice.

Oh well, still a very cool little toy, though.

BTW, you can calibrate its margin of error to, I think, .2 cents or something. If you are on stage and your tuning doesn't have to be studio-perfect, you can give it a larger margin and it won't take so long to tune.

    Don't read this.
