Default I wanted something different for the collection...

    Yo Gang!
Over the past 6 months, when I go to the Pittsburgh Guitar Center, I do my walk through, and generally, I can spot something cool in minutes. Anyways, over the summer, during one of my reconnaissance missions I spotted a Gibson and a Fender lap slide. Now, I've always dug the sound of slide guitar. I looked at both of these, thought, man, it would be cool as hell to get one. I did my walk and left.
Well, after months of seeing the Fender sit down there, I finally asked, "Hey, any chance of you guys bringing down the price?" They brought it down to a price I liked, and the credit card came out. Its beat up, I hate the color, chrome is bubbling on the pickup cavity, and the metal fretboard is beat up, however, I have already contacted someone I know that does metal work for guitars about this and I think maybe he might be able to whip something up to resurrect my Lap slide? Also, its gonna get painted. I figured I'd share some pics...

I've taken worse pics, but I think this gives ya an idea of what it looks like. Now, I need to learn how to play it, lol! -Red43j

P.S. Aside from the problems, it still sounds great. I am considering changing the pickup to a Seymour Duncan mini, maybe a JB?
Eddie must think I'm a BOZO to want to drop THAT much on one of his new Charvel Guitars!

these are really really neat. I'm familiar with those and I'm sure you're going to have a blast with it. What kind of paint job are you going to give it? Stripes?

I have one of those. It's a 1957 model with a little tweed case. Do you know what year it is? Is it one of the re-issues? They have actually accrued some vintage value. If it's a 50's you may want to leave it all original, and watch it go up in price over the next few years. Any changes de-value it.

I understand you may not care, and that's cool.

And you totally have a valid point.
I was going to disassemble it again and find out what year it is (these are so easy to take apart!). I did look into what model it was, and I know that they write the year under the metal tuner plate, not on the wood, but right on the plate itself! I kinda wondered if it was worth anything, but I tend to think that the Guitar Center had it for like $379 and I talked 'em down to $250 it must not be that much. Sadly, it has no case. I need one. I'm kinda thinking that if it had value, Guitar Center woulda wanted a heckofva lot more $$. I'm thinking that I'm gonna go forward with my plan. -Red43j

Fair enough. Last year on e-bay they got up to about $700.00 in good condition w/original case. Currently a clean one is still hovering at about $550.00. One in the condition yours is in, probably about $300.00 to $350.00.

It's a Fender Champ, by the way. Made from 1955 to 1981 originally, and recently re-issued.

There will be date codes on the pots .

Cool guitars. Sounds kick ass through any 15 to 30 watt tube amp.

they really do sound kick ass through a small tube amp...in my experience selling these, they are just all over the place in terms of availability. Unless you've got one of the very old ones in great condition with original case and the candy, you're not sitting on something that is going to every really jump up in value. I know guys that have bought 4 and 5 of them because they sound great, can be had for 250-300 bucks and can keep them in different tunings and do different things with the pickups and paint...unless you're a real passionate vintage gear guy, i wouldn't think much of refining this one...you can always pick up another one, in better shape with a case, to keep as a vintage investment and still not spend more than 400-500 bucks if you keep your eyes open for a good deal. They're have been tons of these coming through the three Houston GCs for years...

No problem. Junior Brown is one show I NEVER miss when he comes to this area. Just thought we could use someone to follow in his footsteps someday.

tell you what, give me a couple of hours. My best friend is a pick up specialist who handles a lot of pro accounts and helps them design guitars, pedal boards etc etc. I'll call him a little later and get a couple suggestions for ya.

Though striping it would be more than a bit cliche, it would still be pretty cool...especially if you selected a different colour scheme!

I have a buddy/customer that plays the shit out of all slide type instruments, pedal steel, lap steel, dobro, etc.. I'll ask him when I see him. Heavier strings keep you from bending them sharp with the bar weight.12 through 56 oughtta do it. Typically folks tune to open tunings in triads. GDBGDB for example. Technique wise, things you will want to know are hammer ons w/ the bar, cross barring, string groupings etc.. Other than that pretty much slide around to what sounds good within the given progression/key. It will take awhile but, not like playing the guitar,.... or God forbid the violin.

As for a case. Fender has re-issued these, and I'm sure they have cases available.

both me and my buddy agreed, stay away from the mini humbuckers...if you want to maintain the same spirit of the instrument but just have a little more grit or bite, try something like the fender 59's or a hot noiseless one of the hot rodded tele pickups on the market made by seymour duncan or dimarzzio...there's a lot of options. Me, I'd probably go with a fender pick up but the dimarzios are really really nice too!
