Default Was Ed's Frankenstrat body made from Swamp or Northern Ash?

I have heard some say swamp and others northern, which makes me confused. Which one is it, swamp or northern?

Here is some information from Warmoth:

    Ash (Fraxinus americana):
We have two very different types of Ash: Northern Hard Ash and Swamp Ash (Southern Soft Ash).

Northern Hard Ash is very hard, heavy and dense. A Strat® body will normally weigh 5 lbs. and up. Its density contributes to a bright tone and a long sustain which makes it very popular. Its color is creamy, but it also tends to have heartwood featuring pink to brown tints. The grain pores are open and it takes a lot of finish to fill them up.

Swamp Ash is a prized wood for many reasons. It is a fairly light weight wood which makes it easily distinguishable from Hard Ash. A Strat® body will normally weigh under 5 lbs. Many of the 50's Fenders were made of Swamp Ash. The grain is open and the color is creamy. This wood is a very nice choice for clear finishes. Swamp Ash is our second most popular wood. It is a very musical wood offering a very nice balance of brightness and warmth with a lot of "pop".

Then again, it very well may be ash. 50 it is, 50 it ain't - everybody has their grassy knoll theories done to death about this, and why not, its a legendary axe.

If this question is in reference to a project guitar, or desired body wood, keep in mind shit pickups in a great piece of wood sound like shit - and vice/versa. Just like someone who's a hack that can't play for shit is going to sound like shit if he's playing a Brian Moore custom through a Cornford, while Eddie (when he's not insane) or Yngwie could kill someone on a Squier or Epiphone through a Crate practice amp.

That's my long road way of tellin' ya if this is for the above, instead of a purely historical inquiry, don't ignore the importance of the pickups. There's some great pickups that will deliver some great tone in quite a few species of wood.
    FUCK THE DUMB SHIT!!!!

I tend to agree with rols on this one.

Swamp ash, being very porous, would have a definite effect with half the finish removed, not to mention the grain looks much more like alder, from pics I've seen of it...but I freely admit that I'm no expert.

To take this thread even more off topic, someone with a very strong opinion once told me that his black/yellow '79 Charvel (buried with Dime) was a mahogany body... anyone hear that or have an opinion on that?

As for the original question, I always thought it was swamp ash, but I would bow to anything Rol says (who painted my Wolfgang in the link below 7 years ago). Thanks again Rol!

According to Chip Ellis at Charvel/Fender...Ed's guitar is made of swamp ash.

The part that doesnt make sense is that you cant see the grain in any pics of eds guitar and the paint is very smooth. I would love to see a close picture of his guitar (not the replica) to see if you can see any grain in the paint (besides the places where the paint has worn thin).

I painted my swamp ash body and you can clearly see grain through the paint in certain light.

Also, the Fender replica doesnt look like swamp ash either up close.

I was watching the Jump Video and the guitar in one shot and light reflection looked very smooth without any grain.

However, Kyle at Divebomb says he has seen pics of Ed's Frankenstein that shoes the grain.

    Ahhh...theories abound!

Yeah, I love those guitars on your website! So how was Ed when you met him back in 1986? I believe your story on the Red Devil, plus it sounds cooler to me!

Ah,yes my friend! Anyways my theory is that it's Northern Ash, because of the sound, yeah I know it would have grain everywhere! But still, it could be swamp ash or even alder, but unless anyone has played THE Frankenstein, not the copy, the real one, we will never know...

We probably will never know but...Chip Ellis who has pulled that guitar apart says it is Swamp ash.

I was 19 at the time and meeting the one person in the world that you wanted to meet more than anyone is quite a rush. EVH was very humble and very drunk. Amazing day of my life. And envious does not even begin to describe my friends the next day when I told them what happened and showed them the guitar. Thankfully, my sister was there to witness the thing, but taking pictures didn't occur to me until after it all happened. I should have been more prepared, but oh well.
