Backward Masking: Real, Or Do Some Folk Need To Get A Life?

When I was a kid, a radio show was broadcast regarding the "Paul Is Dead" rumors that surrounded the Beatles in the late sixties. Allegedly, there were various "clues" to be found if one played certain Beatles records backwards. I thought the idea of Paul dying and then being replaced by an exact double to be complete and utter hogwash, yet damn...it was fun doing the research!

In any event, the basic set up is this: One is played a record in it's normal fashion, then the listener is told what to expect and the record is played in reverse. The recognizable flaw in this practice is that the idea of "auto-suggestion" is self evident. If shown a picture of a cloud, one will more than likely see nothing in it. YET...if "told" the cloud forms the image of a hamburger (or other object), one will the actually SEE IT in the picture.

These things fall fairly evenly into two categories.

    A. "Dude, come on...don't you think that is a bit of a stretch?"

    Or...

    B. "Holy shit! THAT is downright creepy! "

Of course, some of this stuff is the result of overworked imaginations with too much free time (in fact in one of these vids, you'll overhear a guy's mom telling him to get of off the computer, as she needs to use it ).

You can be the judge as to whether you believe this stuff or not.

    Enjoy!

I remember back in the late 80's I was watching a local TV show about backmasking. The guy played a scream of DLR on Running with the Devil backwards. I think it said something about "I love you Lucifer" and it was pretty clear. The guy said it was inhumanly possible for a singer to do this but it was actually Satan influencing what DLR sang. As you might expect the guy said that when you have a song with the Devil in its title, you are inviting Satan.

He played some Styx and of course Led Zeppelin as well. Of course I have forgotten which scream it was but it was kinda cool to hear Van Halen being mentioned with this.

very cool clips...i've heard most all the beatle backmastering clips over the years but there was a couple in that last one I hadn't heard before.

the beatles were an exception in that they began planting stuff on their records...but generally speaking, I think it's pretty much a matter of people looking to find something that isn't there but because they're convinced it is, they find it.

Prince: Darling Nikki off of the Purple Rain soundtrack. The end of the track features what sounds like gospel singers and Prince singing unintelligible lyrics. When played backwards: "How are you? I am fine because I know the Lord is coming, comong soon".

Pink Floyd's "Empty Spaces" from 'The Wall.'

If you think that tune is creepy on its own, wait 'till you hear it backwards with their backmasked congratulatory message. When I was 14, I found it late at night while huddled over the turntable alone in my room in the dark with headphones

Iron Maiden's "Still Life", from wikipedia, and yes, it's really there:

At the beginning of the sixth track, the band included a hidden message which could only be understood by playing the album backwards. This was a joke and an intended swing back at the critics who had accused Maiden of being satanic. The backwards-message features Nicko McBrain mimicking Idi Amin (or rather mimicking John Bird mimicking Idi Amin) uttering the following phrase "What ho said the t'ing with the three "bonce", do not meddle with things you don't understand...", followed by a belch. The phrase itself is taken from the satirical album The Colleckerted [sic] Broadcasts of Idi Amin by Bird and Alan Coren. "What ho" and "What ho said the t'ing" are phrases that also crop up regularly on McBrain's "Listen With Nicko!" tracks from the First Ten Years collection

This stuff does give me goose pimples. As many have said, some of the messages are intentional and put there because, at the time, there was so much attention paid to backmasking. Some of it is just downright silly, though.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the famous "Do It" in Judas Priest"s "Better By You, Better By Me" (did I get the title right?)

Does anybody remember the excellent PBS documentary regarding the trial of Judas Priest over this song?
