    A Randy Newman Thread...

I've been listening to this fellow for what seems like forever. This is a guy that once described the Ohio River as a "fire hazard".

    Some vids, from Randy Newman.

I think Michael Richards and Dog Chapman would have something to say about "rednecks."

Something like, "How the f*ck did this guy keep his job and we didn't?!?!?!

How times have changed, how times have changed.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

For one thing, "Rednecks" was one song on a concept album called "Good Old Boys", ridiculing the bigotry of the "enlightened" south. And if one listens carefully to the words of "Sail Away", one will realise the song's narrator is in fact the captain of a slave ship.

Newman was (and is) widely recognized as a leading songwriter in the cause of the equal rights movement. Comparing him to the above mentioned miscreants pretty much misses the point altogether.

F#@K! I had that ELO ditty in my head all afternoon after lunch!

All I have is Randy Newman's Faust to help me on the road tomorrow.

Default Newman Returns With First Album In 9 Years

    from www.billboard.com:

    May 02, 2008, 10:50 AM ET

    Katie Hasty, N.Y.

Randy Newman is set to release his first album of new material in nine years. "Harps and Angels," produced by Mitchell Froom and Lenny Waronker, arrives via Nonesuch on Aug. 5.

"A Few Words in Defense of My Country," a single released exclusively to iTunes last year, will be included in the track list.

Newman's 2003 hits collection, "The Randy Newman Songbook: Vol. 1," was the singer/songwriter's last release and first for Nonesuch. His last original set, "Bad Love," was released in 1999. His highest Billboard 200 charting album was 1978's "Little Criminals," which peaked at No. 9.

Newman, 64, has a handful of performances planned for the month of May, plus a concert with the Los Angeles Philharmonic during the Fourth of July weekend at the Hollywood Bowl.

He's slated for a show at this year's New Orleans Jazz Fest on May 1 and another symphony-backed show in Denver on May 23. He will perform solo May 4 in St. Louis and May 5 and 6 in Iowa City, Iowa.

Here is the track list to "Harps and Angels":

    "Harps and Angels"
    "Losing You"
    "Laugh and Be Happy"
"A Few Words in Defense of My Country"
    "A Piece of the Pie"
    "Easy Street"
    "Korean Parents"
    "Only a Girl"
    "Potholes"
    "Feels Like Home"

Cool, thanks for the heads-up. "Bad Love" was a terrific album. It's good to see him stepping away from some of those at times smarmy soundtrack projects.
