Default Chinese Sub Surfaces In Middle Of US Navy Exercise

Aw crap, I remember when we used to be good at this kinda thing:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/liv...n_page_id=1811

Do you remember that whole affair with the Air Force accidentally loading live nukes onto a B-52? This will be the Navy version of that, watch for some serious house-cleaning over the next eight months.

"The lone Chinese vessel slipped past at least a dozen other American warships which were supposed to protect the carrier from hostile aircraft or submarines.

And the rest of the costly defensive screen, which usually includes at least two U.S. submarines, was also apparently unable to detect it. "

Well that's to some of you who say "our anti-nukes are better than russian nukes" and such. Lol.

    Wow :|

Well I just found out the incident happened in October 2006.

    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/...n2179694.shtml

I wonder why it took it so long for Daily Mail to publish it.

    those sneaky little chinamen.

this is NOT a good thing for the Navy, and definitely not good for the USA.

what the fuck man, a stealth sub?

Well according to some people they might have just been laying down there, decided to pop up, saw a bunch of navy boats and went 'oops'. Makes sense, but still there was a case in the mid-90ies when a small fleet of Russian subs patrolled the east coast without being detected for days.

    A good read here.

My guess, and it's just a guess, is that a couple of things happened:

The Navy actually had the sub on sonar but misidentified it as one of ours, with all of the ships being linked up electroncally it's possible that one ship screwed up and then that mistake was forwarded throughout the rest of the battle group. The Navy does this with aircraft more often than they care to admit so why not subs?

The sub slipped in through the sonar net in a spot where the ship tasked with that sector had it's computer doing an automatic recycle/reboot (which only takes a few seconds but that can be long enough).

The Chinese sub commander is just really good.

I really doubt this. It was a conventional boat, and they sound very different than nuclear boats.

This really isn't too surprising. It's a common enough experience during exercises, and the Navy was nervous enough about it to rent a Swedish sub (I think it was Swedish) to practice against for a while.

With the fall of the USSR, we've come to neglect a lot of our ASW doctrine/skills. Better, I think, to have people shaken up and to start addressing the problem now rather than when there's actually shooting going on. What a person has to wonder, of course, is how often this might happen with the sub commander deciding not to make his presence known.

A guy that used to work for me was on a Trident sub for 6 years. He told me that this happened to them twice off the coast of Hawaii. He said all the sudden another sub appeared out of thin air, each time attack subs were sent out but they could never find them.

This is just what he told me.

My favorite story is the time the Greek air force snuck up on my brother's spy plane. They were out over the Black Sea and by chance my brother had switched his headphones over to the pilot's feed just in tim to here him say "Whoah! Where the hell did those guys come from?". So my brother got out of his chair and went to the one window and looked out and was suprised to see 8 Greek F-16s just off of the wing tip. He then looked back down the interior at all of the high-tech sensing equipment and 20 some odd guys manning their stations and shook his head.
