Default Spain's king tells Venezuela's Chavez to "shut up"

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - Spain's King Juan Carlos told Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Saturday to "shut up" during closing speeches by leaders from the Latin world that brought the Ibero-American summit to an acrimonious end.

"Why don't you shut up?" the king shouted at Chavez, pointing a finger at the president when he tried to interrupt a speech by Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.

Zapatero was in the middle of a speech at the summit of mostly leftist leaders from Latin America, Portugal, Spain and Andorra, and was criticizing Chavez for calling former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar a fascist.

Chavez, a leading leftist foe of Washington, also attacked Spanish businessman Gerardo Diaz Ferran earlier in the week after he questioned the safety of foreign investments in Venezuela.

"I want to express to you President Hugo Chavez that in a forum where there are democratic governments ... one of the essential principles is respect," Zapatero told the leaders gathered in the Chilean capital, Santiago.

"You can disagree radically, without being disrespectful," Zapatero, a socialist, said sternly, drawing applause from some of the other heads of state.

Chavez, a former soldier, made his mark on the three-day summit from the start, announcing his arrival earlier in the week with defiant lyrics from a Mexican ballad.

"With the truth in hand, I do not offend, I do not fear," Chavez said on Saturday. "The government of Venezuela reserves the right to respond to any aggression."
"Watch what people are cynical about, and one can often discover what they lack.” -- Gen. George S. Patton

Chavez is real trouble and he's a tool to boot...just once I'd like to see a truly noble leftist leader who manages to stay noble...

You can keep making comments like this, but it only hurts our country. People like you don't take any threats seriously and that will eventually hurt us badly.

Let me guess, you (like your buddy Sean Penn) think that Chavez is great and our government should learn to be more like Venezuela's.

Actually its a comment about our so called leader in office. Chavez is a dictator is he not? There's no democracy in Venz? There's oil there also? So what's to stop Dumbya from rushing head long into another conflict? He's certainly arrogant enough to do so. I fail to see how saying what I say hurts the country. And how do I not take threats seriously when I question our leader's intentions/reasons for going to war? I never said Chavez was great. Perhaps you should re-read my post. I just question how using sanctions is good for one looney dictator (Kim in NK) but not good for another looney dictator (Sadam).

Certainly can't be any worse than the pickle we are in now-high gas prices, undervalued currency, massive debt, and on and on and on and...... At least the next person will actually do something other than sit by and twidle their thumbs hoping the problems go away.

Wow, a liberal L.S.U. fan. Don't see that very often.

As far as the gas prices, what can anybody do? The democrats ran on a platform of lower fuel costs in 2006. Do ya see it going down?? Don't think so and it probably never will. It's supply and demand, You got China and India now demanding much more and we still can't meet demand in our country because we have not built any refineries in 35 years. Bush invaded Iraq on the wmd premise and we have not seized any of Iraq's oil, so I doubt he would invade Venezuela, who is not a military threat, just to not seize their oil.

You are certianly right when it comes to the debt and I would guess that is partially why our currency is going down. I have no problem with criticism directed toward Bush, I just don't do it in an all encompassing, blind hatred sort of way. When you do that, you lose credibility!!!

United States foreign policy is filled with these sort of double standards...we deal with china but not with Cuba. We have an embargo against Cuba but not Venezuela. We invade Iraq but deal with Iran and on and on and on. Foreign policy has less to do with logic and consistency than it does with pandering to various constituency groups and personal conflicts between various egotistical leaders and the US isn't alone in this...it's just the way it is.

Far from a liberal here by any stretch of the imagination. I fail to see how the most powerful person in the free world can't do anything about gas prices. I am well aware of supply/demand factors, but its not like over night the population of China/India just exploded. There are several things he could do just off the top of my head-suspend the tax temporarily, strategic reserves, push for more drilling elsewhere, speed up refinery building, etc-yet our president does nothing. Of course he and Dick used to run oil companies, so go figure.

Yes, I am aware of the ever chaning reason for why we invade Iraq (WMD's, get Sadam, est. democracy, etc). My point is, there are places elsewhere in the world where the same scenario fits (see North Korea, only difference is we know for sure they have nukes), yet this administration chooses diplomacy over war. My question is why invade Iraq, when you have the same scenario in NK? Why didn't diplomacy work there, yet works for NK/Venz? As far as the debt goes, Bush is spending like a 15 year old at the mall w/her daddy's credit card. I wouldn't say its all encompassing hatred I have for Bush, just total dislike/distain for what he has done-or hasn't done for that matter-since he has been in office. Don't get me started on how he screwed farmers over and still is.

Don't be so sure of that. It can always get worse, and in ways you probably won't even think of.
