    Default Boiling??

Anyone ever try this? I can't imagine it works, and it is probably just more of Ed's *homemade* folklore. Just curious!

I boil the strings so they stretch, because if you just put them on and clamp it down, the strings stretch out on the guitar. I just take a pack and let it boil for 20 minutes in the hot water. And then I dry them in the sun, because otherwise they rust. But I only use them one night anyway, so who cares if they rust? -- EVH

I've done it a few times before because of that exact quote from Ed. I didn't really notice any difference at all, in tone or being able to keep a locking trem in tune, so I stopped doing it. Seemed like a waste of time.

I did it a few times in the early eighties, yet honestly it's a pain in the ass for little reward. I never really noticed a difference in tone or any "pre-stretched" quality.

It takes all of 5 seconds to strech the strings yourself. or go ahead and wate the 20 minutes. The only benefit to do this is for Bass players. Most of them do it. Due to the size of the strings.

But if you string your guitar yourself you can have them streched in no time at all by bending.

I used to boil mine, it had better tone, but I never dried them in the sun! Guess what? They never rusted!

No, yet my dimwit neighbor tried to change the coloring of his lava lamp via the oven in 1987. It tipped over, spilling the wax and nearly set his kitchen on fire.

    Good times.

i know bass players that do it to get more life from their strings. seems to "sharpen" them back up a little.

I tried it once on guita strings, and noticed no difference.

ive boiled my bass strings when they got old and sounded like crap. they usually stay good for about 2 more gigs.

after boiling, i wiped them down with rubbing alcohol so they dont rust.

Bassists boil their strings to clean them. It lengthens their overall life. (Bass strings are, of course, much more expensive than guitar strings.)

When I string a guitar up I go through about a 20 minute process of stretching, bending, and playing the strings. Once I've done that they still have their new string "brightness" but pretty much stay in tune reliably. Boiling sounds like a big pain in the ass. Just play 'em...

Boiling of bass strings just removes the buildup of skin oil, dirt, dead skin cells, and gunge. Same result can be achieved just using rubbing alcohol.

Boiling new guitar strings will have no effect on tone, stretching or any other claimed bullshit. All that may be accomplished is removing any residual oil applied to the strings during the manaufacturing process. Thus shortening the time frame for corrosion, rust and tarnishing the nickel, steel or bronze surfaces... heating those metals to 212 degrees will not make any measurable change in tinsel strength, tone nor stretching.

Don't waste your time... it's all bullshit.
