    5150 Power Amp Tubes

    Hey guys,

I did some massive research on this website and the eddievanhalen.com forums, as well as many reviews on tube sites, BUT, I need some up-to-date advice from my fellow 5150 owners.

I'm retubing my original block letter 5150 head and I've decided to go with JJ 12AX7/ECC83 for the preamp, but after much deliberation I still can't decide on a quartet of power amp tubes. Since I've had this amp I've gone through a set of Sovtek 6L6's and a set of Sovtek 5881's. While these tubes were decent, I want to know if someone has any better suggestions.

I'm leaning towards the JJ 6L6GC tubes and I've heard many good things about these tubes. What would sound best in my 5150 according to you guys out there? And then perhaps it will give me a better idea of what I'm looking for. Something that's low noise and doesn't take away alot of the harmonics etc. Thanks guys!

JJ tubes. I used sovs and they sucked in my 5150. Sounded weak. Just my opinion. I yanked them out after one blew. And that was in just two months.

ive tried sovtecks and found them ok, ive been using mainly groove tubes for the past few years and thought they sounded o.k. but people recomended the j.j's to me so i dropped some in mine and the difference is VERY noticeable...for the better

I've used the Sovtek 5881 in the power section of my 5150. I thought they sounded good but were very unreliable-short life span. I never got more than a couple of months out of any of them. I've switched to the EH 6L6. Not crazy about them but they last. I also have the EH in the pre and they seem good there. If the Sovtek's were more reliable, I would stick with them. Never tried JJ's.

Thanks alot guys! Some solid info... it looks like JJ's are in the lead right now for recommendations. My JJ 12AX7's should be arriving shortly. I'm going to order the JJ 6L6GC's tonight. I actually found that thetubestore.com and tubedepot.com are alot cheaper than buying tubes from guitar places around here. It's around 30 bucks for a matched pair online and in store they're 30 bucks each tube! Unheard of haha. I can't wait to get these tubes in.

I did a nice little cosmetic mod on my amp too, took the wood covering out of the front so it's just the grill with the 5150 logo screwed on, it looks very VERY badass.
