WTF With The Saturation Of Christmas Ads On TV, So Early This Year?

Last evening (Thursday November 8th, 2007), over a 3 hour period while watching tv, I counted over 11 Christmas themed ads on tv. This is the first week of November. Huh?

Look, I've read of the bleak forecast for merchants this season, yet are things truly so dire as to require "saturation bombing advertising" via the networks to compensate for potential loss? Are businesses that frightened of a shortfall this holiday season?

The air of outright desperation is indeed evident, and also somewhat appalling.

I just took a glance to see what was playing at the movies and I noticed that "Fred Claus" movie opens today, which I thought was a little early...

chef, we may be inundated with holiday ads now and it may seem early, but Thanksgiving is less than 2 weeks away. I think those ads are aimed at those pompous, hyperactive people who do their holiday shopping before Thanksgiving. Yes, those people...those smug creatures with their bouncy, high-step walk and their hybrid cars....

Considering the state of the economy, this is all in desperation. With gas prices as high as they are going to be in the upcoming weeks and beyond, this is retail company's last breath. Hard times are coming.

I walked into Walmart this past Saturday, Nov 3rd, and couldn't believe it but they had Xmas music playing in the store and cashiers wearing Santa hats. Sorry, but that's too freaking early. Plus, I wanted to buy a gift card but it took me forever to find one that didn't have a Christmas theme on it. It was a birthday gift so the Xmas theme didn't work for me.

I'm as big a fan as anyone of the holidays but please save this shit at least until Thanksgiving week. November 3rd is too damn early.

I went to buy a garden hose a couple of weeks ago (mid October), and couldn't find any because the entire area had been cleared out for Christmas stuff.

Anything before Thanksgiving is too early so I don't pay attention to it. But it does get earlier every year.

    I'm already sick of it.

If people are happy, they will spend. The bleak economic outlook will keep people from spending money so the stores are doing whatever they can to get the consumers in the door. With gas and heating costs soaring, it's gonna be a tight winter for the retailers if people have to cut back on the holiday spending. Thankfully, my bank just sent me an escrow overage check of almost $800 so my Christmas will be merry!

they already have a sign that says "this way to christmas land" and another sign that says "46 days to christmas" and the obligatory tree.

it is most certainly a sign of how poorly retail sales have been, DESPITE all the "reports" coming from DC regarding a healthy economy, consumer confidence and the like. Speaking as someone in a very specialized retail industry, this year has not been great and for several months we've all be saying "well, hopefully we'll have a good christmas." Now then, I won't stoop to such silly and quite simply base and insulting tactics as to put on xmas music and decorate the whole place and start doing holiday sales and crap, but I am certainly keeping my fingers crossed in hopes that my clientelle will elect to purchase goods from me as opposed to other things. I deal in a relatively "niche" upscale industry but even people I know who deal in run-o-the-mill stuff are all saying that sales are down. Now speaking as a consumer and a customer, I just don't have the liquid funds to be spending money on dvd players, musical equipment, furniture, a new car or anything else like that. With gas being where it's at and the cost of mine and my wife's health care, there just isn't a whole lot to spend on stuff. I know I'm certainly not alone in that. It's not that we're in the poor house, but what little money we have we just either put it away or just go out and see a movie or have a few drinks. My outlook is that when people don't have a bunch of money to spend on a big vacation or on a bunch of consumer products, we'll use what we do have on smaller little "gifts to ourselves" like a nice meal or an evening out. When people spend their money like that, instead of at a mall or walmart or whatever, it will obviously cause problems for retailers.

Unfortunatley, it seems to get earlier every year, and , I find myself starting to dread the whole goddamned thing.
I have kids, and young nieces and nephews, and everyone around the office has young families, and that should get you in the mood but.....
I'm not a religious person, but i recall a feeling of Christmas spirit that just doesn't seem to exist anymore.
It is the total retail blitzkreig that gets in your face starting now and continues until after New Years that has become so overwhelming. It seems any goodwill message of the season is getting harder and harder to find.
Last year we traveled by air to Vancouver Island for what should have been a fun few days with family and friends, but the weather, lost luggage, canceled and delayed flights, not to mention the underlying anger of everyone else trying to get somewhere and back just turned it into a nightmare that i will likely never repeat.
I'm not Scrooge, but Christmas has turned into such a horrible cash cow, it's difficult to deal with.
The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

This next part could really confuse things. Let's stay focused. #asis
