Default Container Ship Gashed In Collision With Bay Bridge

Container Ship Gashed In Collision With Bay Bridge

SAN FRANCISCO -- A 920-foot container ship Cosco Busan, heading out of the San Francisco Bay from the Port Of Oakland, collided with a support tower of the fog-shrouded Bay Bridge early Wednesday, leaving it with a 100-foot gash in its side and leaking oil into the bay.

The collision happened at about 8:30 a.m. during the morning commute but did not disrupt traffic on the bridge.

California Department of Transportation officials were examining the Delta Tower -- the third tower east of the San Francisco anchorage -- for damage. Coast Guard Officer Anya Hunter said a visual inspection by her agency from the water found no damage.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Coast Guard was examining the fully loaded Hanjin container ship that was leaking oil for at least 30 minutes after the collision. A huge gash -- possibly extending as long as 100 feet -- was visible in its side.

Hunter said that the ship operators had transferred the oil to another part of the vessel and stopped the leaking.

But there may be other damage. The Alameda County Sheriff's Department said it marine patrol boat has spotted debris in the water near the crash scene.

The ship has been anchored north of Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay.

OK, it's 2007 seven. With all of the electronic doodads available for navigation, how on Earth can this happen, fog or not? I mean come on, you can get a GPS transponder at fucking KMart nowadays. How hard can it be to basically kick a field goal, when the damned goal posts are that far apart?

Well they did mention something about fog. But I would think technology would be able to pick up something like that to be able to locate obstacles.

Dunno. Just glad they didn't hurt the bridge. Sounds like another Valdez situation.

Pretty serious gash. Fuck it, get some bondo, some tennis nets, perhaps some masonite and hit the sea! At least they did not lose the ladder.

Yeah, definitely nothing that a little duct tape and bondo couldn't fix.

California: Crew detained as part of oil spill investigation

    November 12, 2007
SAN FRANCISCO - The entire crew of the cargo ship that sideswiped a bridge, causing San Francisco Bay's worst oil spill in nearly two decades, has been detained as part of a criminal investigation, a Coast Guard official said Sunday.

Capt. William Uberti said he notified the U.S. attorney's office on Saturday about issues involving management and communication among members of the bridge crew: the helmsman, the watch officer, the ship's master and the pilot.

The crew of the Cosco Busan, which disgorged 58,000 gallons of oil into the Bay on Wednesday, is being detained on the ship for questioning, said Uberti, head of the Coast Guard for Northern California.

A preliminary Coast Guard investigation found that human error, not mechanical failure, caused the ship to crash into the Bay Bridge.
