19 S.Florida Schools Under Lockdown, Suspect On The Loose In Broward County...

Updated 11 minutes ago: A repeat from two months ago, as a criminal attacks a police officer and starts a massive manhunt.

BSO deputy shot in Pompano Beach
    Jail transport van found

    10:41 AM EST, November 7, 2007

POMPANO BEACH - Investigators have found the van that was missing after a Broward Sheriff's deputy was shot and critically injured Wednesday morning.

The deputy, who has not been named, was transporting a robbery defendant to court when they apparently got into an altercation, the sheriff's office said. The deputy was shot and critically wounded by the defendant, then thrown from the van to the parking lot of a Pompano Beach night club on Powerline Road near Hammondville Road, the sheriff's office said.

The suspect, Michael Mazza, stole the deputy's gun and van, which looks like a white ambulance marked with the sheriff's office logo, said Sheriff's Office spokesman Elliot Cohen. Coral Springs police removed Mazza's 3-year-old son from Creative Child Preschool this morning, according to the school's director Sheri Marcus-Newman.

Cohen confirmed that the van has been found outside a Flannigan's restaurant at Southwest 27th Avenue and Davie Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale.

Rescue crews took the critically wounded deputy to North Broward Medical Center. His condition is unknown.

Mazza, 40, of Coral Springs, who was in a charcoal colored suit with a white shirt and black necktie, last seen going westbound on Hammondville, said Cohen.

"This is a man who has nothing to lose," Cohen said. "The best lead we have right now is that van."

Detectives are now canvassing the area, going door-to-door at businesses in the search for possible surveillance footage of their suspect. All Broward County public school have been placed on lockdown as investigators search for the suspect.

Cohen said that Mazza's escape may have been planned.

"We are looking at the possibility that this may have been a pre-planned escape attempt," Cohen said. "He may have had outside help."

Cohen said that Mazza is already serving two life sentences for strong-arm robbery and is extremely dangerous.

"This is a man who has nothing to lose," he said.

Cohen also said that Mazza was somehow restrained while being transported, but detectives are still working out what happened in the van.

Officers responded to Diamond Dolls nightclub, 1401 N. Powerline Rd, early Wednesday after someone reported that a deputy had been thrown from his van and was lying in the parking lot, Cohen said.

This is the third shooting of a Broward Sheriff's deputy in the last four months. In August, Deputy Maury Hernandez was critically wounded by a gunman during a routine traffic stop. Less than a week later, Sgt. Chris Reyka was killed in Pompano Beach while running license plates.

Mazza was being transported from a Pompano Beach jail to Fort Lauderdale for 9 a.m. court appearance before Circuit Judge Paul Backman for a Coral Springs robbery. His charges are robbery while wearing a mask, fleeing law enforcement, reckless driving and two counts of armed robbery.

Mazza's criminal history dates back to 1993 and includes robberies and drug possession.

Backman, Mazza's attorney, Maurice Graham, and prosecutors listened to updates about the shooting on the radio. Graham said he's known Mazza since he was a teenager.

At about 9:30 a.m., Graham said he filed a mistrial because his client was absent from court, and "the equilibrium of the case has changed, things have changed."

Graham last saw his client about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday when they were in court picking a jury for the case.

Parents at Tedder Elementary School in Deerfield Beach were turned away from school. Sheriff's deputies declined to comment but told moms and dads who were dropping off their children that the school was in lockdown.

Willy Cleirvin, 49, found out what happened when he arrived at the school in the 4100 block of Northeast Second Avenue to pickup a set of keys from his children.

"When they find him I hope they put him straight in the electric chair," Cleirvin said. "If he can shoot a deputy, he can do the same to me."

The sheriff's office is asking anyone with information to call Broward Crimestoppers at 954-493-TIPS.

Staff writers Andrew Tran, Tonya Alanez and Sallie James contributed to this report.

The deputy (listed as being 76 ) just died.

    BSO deputy killed

    By Akilah Johnson | Sun-Sentinel.com
    11:54 AM EST, November 7, 2007

POMPANO BEACH - A Broward Sheriff's deputy was shot and killed Wednesday morning while transporting a prisoner in a medical van, Sheriff Al Lamberti said.

Deputy Paul Rein, 76, a 20-year veteran, was taking bank robbery suspect Michael Mazza to the Broward courthouse when the suspect overpowered him, shot him with his own gun, and dumped the deputy's body in the parking lot of a Pompano Beach nightclub. Mazza escaped in the van.

"We're sad to report we've lost another deputy," a somber Lamberti said. Rein's wife spoke to him on his cell phone about 10 minutes before the incident, Lamberti said.

Broward County authorities mounted a massive manhunt for Mazza, locking down all public schools while checking leads in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach County.

That's a shame about the deputy. I hope they catch this guy and fry his nuts.

    One thought though....

With the stories you post from Florida, those schools should be in lockdown 24/7
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

lol. Guess you have a point there. Maybe they should keep them on lockdown to not let them out?
