Something I Noticed On Wolf's Playing

Ok let me preface what I'm about to say with, I have NOTHING against Wolfgang. Nothing at all, I wish him the best out there. But on the video I downloaded of the entire 10/16 All-State Arena show, there is something REALLY fucking strange going on with his playing. The only reason I am bringing this is up is three people who also downloaded the video saw the same IDENTICAL thing as me and PM'd me. Even my wife, who is not a musician, sat with me and watched the whole thing and noticed the same thing, at the same place.

During "Jump," there is a close up on Wolf's hands during the first verse of the song. And he is not playing anything that could possibly be considered a bass line, or anything relevant to "Jump." He starts off thumping with his hand not in any real position, and his thumping fingers aren't even consistent enough to be creating anything. Then he does some bizarre vibrato thing, some quick sliding up to notes, that can't possibly be anything. They don't even come close to going along with the progression of the song, hell the verses are just C's (or in this case C#). It's the weirdest thing.

If anyone has seen this video, please comment, I really am interested in discussing this. I am going to try to get a clip of it and post it, I want people's opinions. I mean there is no way on earth what he is playing is the bass part of "Jump" or anything else. It's just him moving his hand up and down the neck.

I swear guys, he's playing air bass. And I'm not saying it to start shit about Wolf, I don't have any issue at all with the kid like I said. But this is so freaking obvious, I can't believe no one has said anything. I gotta get this clip up.

Yes I know this thread is going to be a clusterfuck of insults, but I don't care. When I saw this, I said, "This needs to be discussed immediately, I know I'm not crazy."

I would have to see the clip.. I just watched one clip of Jump from All-state on you tube and he seems to be playing the line.. I mean, for the most part.. For the most part ive noticed Wolf doesnt follow the exact way Mike played the parts..

Hmmm.. I really doubt that the kid is not playing though.. I know you didnt say that he wasnt, but I know there are bound to be plenty of posts saying that its probably piped in.

    Default Besides..

And I am not saying this as an insult to Mike at all, so please noone take it that way.. Most of the classic VH bass lines arent anything complicated.. Then again its kinda hard to hear the bass on a lot of these clips.

And it also appears that Wolfie plays with a Pick most of the time, or atleast his fingernails.

Hang on I'm going to have it up in like 3 mins. You can't hear the bass at all, but what he is playing isn't anything. It's not about what you hear, it's about what you see.

Dude Mike's bass lines are easy sure, but Wolf isn't playing even that. It's nothing. If he was just thumping away I wouldn't even say anything. But this was too weird.

Ok guys here it is. You tell me what you think, I just did the one part real fast. It's kind of pixelated because of YouTube, but you can tell enough just fine.

I see what your saying, but I still think he is playing.. Ive heard some clips where he does a few fills and such and its nothing uncommon.. he does seem to be a bit off tempo at one point.... Not sure what to make of it man, but I do see what your saying.

"Unchained" and "I'll Wait" from this show do the same type of thing. Weird fingerings, strange slides.

First of all, regarding above posted Jump-clip.

The note being played is the open D. (1/2 step tuned down) Hence no left hand action required. In addition to the open D, he seems to be doing these fills at the upper frets. These fills, being upper bass register, are buried under all the sonic mass that's going on. At least in these Youtube clips.

Regarding I'll Wait and Unchained, I think the same situation applys there. Both songs are also in D, if I remember correctly. Unchained definetely is and I'm pretty sure I'll Wait is also. So what we're seeing is the open D being played and left hand is "planning" on playing fills along the neck, if you know what I mean.

Kinda like when you see a guitar player improvising, you'll notice how the fretting hand is moving up and down the neck between licks, as if it's trying to decide what to play next.

    Well, that's my oppinion anyway.

I always forget they play it in D now...it's not so much the notes anyway, it's what he's playing. The slides and the vibrato don't make any sense where he is playing them, even if he was deciding where to go next. It's not logical playing. It looks like someone playing air bass, not like a musician improvising. And what improvising can you do over that part of the verse? It's so straight forward.

It did look kinda weird, and air guitarish? kinda fake, but i have to trust that it is not.

You can't really hear the bass, you can hear a little thump once in a while. But with all the bizarre shit he did there, you'd think you'd hear that because there is no way that fit in any way. I'm just scratching my head, that's fucking air guitar!!
