Sammy Hagar, Waboritas party the night away at Lakewood Theater

ROCK REVIEW: Sammy Hagar, Waboritas party the night away at Lakewood Theater

12:00 AM CDT on Wednesday, October 24, 2007

By MIKE DANIEL / The Dallas Morning News
    mdaniel@dallasnews.com

For Sammy Hagar, there's actually more than one way to rock.

Since he ran off to the southern reaches of Baja in the early 1990s, he's embraced and made major-league bank on the macho party-rock aesthetic, tropical-style. Think of him as the distorted-guitar equivalent of Jimmy Buffett, or a gravelly voiced compadre of Kenny Chesney (who actually is a friend; Mr. Hagar covers "One Sip" on his latest CD).

He's been so successful partially because of his business sense, which is acute, measured and conservative. The other part? The man can throw a mean fiesta, and he knows what his clinetele likes because he's a client of it himself.

Mr. Hagar's sold-out theater-tour stop at the Lakewood Theater on Tuesday (he also performs there tonight) had all sorts of party favors flying around. He took the stage and promptly fired an air cannon full of confetti at the balcony. Pretty (well, pretty skimpy, anyway) young things delivered drinks to him and his Waboritas onstage. Fake palm trees helped security stand guard, and a row of adoring (albeit unanimated) fan-club members basked in the proceedings behind him.

The former majority proprietor of Cabo Wabo tequila, which he sold to Skyy Spirits this summer, ate it all up like a tart bowl of menudo. Without shame, he constantly tied banners around his waist, wore clothing chucked his way and signed autographs "This isn't an in-store; this is a party!" he joked even on objects that had nothing to do with him. A picture of red shoes? Sure: It's red, and I'm the Red Rocker! A replica of Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten's jersey? The crowd's cheering mightily, so why the heck not?

Bottom line: Mr. Hagar is an unabashed party whore, and he's a millionaire because of it. Well, and because he's good at it, too. And because a film crew was recording the show for a future DVD.

For that latter reason, his band performed two previously unheard songs to be included on his and the Waboritas' next studio disc: one a rather disingenuous tribute to James Brown and the other a hard-charging save-our-planet (or at least my beach) ode. Yep: a serious song. Jiminy; that'll kill a jolly mood real quick.

Not at the Lakewood. Mr. Hagar'd stroked off the throng's swig-happy he-men and janes with four Van Halen covers (accompanied by its former bassist, Michael Anthony, who's retreated to Camp Hagar these days), a run of Mr. Hagar's own stuff ("Three Lock Box," "Sam I Am," "I'll Fall in Love Again") and a cover of Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart."

    The clients were happy.

Yes, Sammy Hagar and the Waboritas are a frightfully competent party-rock act, even with the bizarre addition of Caribbean percussion accompaniment to the songs mentioned above (maracas during "Why Can't This Be Love?" All right, then). Yes, Mr. Hagar's an egotist, but he does it with a smile and with tongue planted firmly in cheek, like a tequila-flavored Everlasting Gobstopper.

Eat it and smile, Mr. Hagar. Oops; wrong frontman. Like he cares.

If you want a little peace, sometimes you got to fight
We got to walk through the darkness

jeezuz...what did he say? I'm surprised that he'd say anything given the fact he's 'endorsed' the current VH tour as a good idea. Funny stuff though...kinda like when he said on Craig Kilborn last yr that Dave's appearance doing his bluegrass VH made him appear 'joyous'...hehe.
