    Tapping question

I have been playing for about a year just picking up things from videos and songs and I am having trouble doing true tapping (not hammer-ons). Ed seems to be able to do it on any fret to get the harmonic. What is the technique and do you tap directly on the fret? I need help from an expert!!

I tap directly on the fret...I usually know where to tap because if I'm holding the note on the 7th fret...I always tap on the 12th fret as kind of a reference point...but form there I tap on the 10th fret and the 14th fret and so on....

I just watched videos of Ed continually until I memorized every little harmonic he was making and then I slowed it down and tried to figure out where he was tapping...

I'm no where near an expert, but I'll try to help!

First, you need to have a note fretted (can be anywhere on any string), then you tapthat string on the 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, or 12th fret up from that. As for where on the fret you tap, it really depends. I find that sometimes it helps to tap on the front edge, sometimes dead on, it just depends on what works for you. Also, tapping quicky and lightly is essential. If you hit too hard, you kill it, to light, and you can't hear it.

Then there are strings, how much action your guitar is set up for, pickups, amp settings, etc. For that, you going to have to ask someone else, but I think you just have to tinker with it.

I understand that this is subjective advice, but TAP HARD for harmonics. Ironically, I am not contradicting bsbll4's advice about tapping quickly and "lightly." If you tap hard in the right place, it will be light and quick!

That's very true as well. You have to tap harder on the lower strings, lighter on the higher strings (at least on my guitar).

By the way, This guys doing this after only a year playing? I had never even heard/though of "harmonics" at that point. Damn, I suck.

    LOL.

I used to think I was pretty good, then youtube was invented, now I realize I suck. Watching some 12 year old kid with better chops is very humbling.

The little tapped harmonic outro of 316 is a great song to practice on. It's a simple pattern played relatively slowly. My guitar teacher at the time told me to tap each note of that little piece 5x so I could get the feel for how hard to tap. It was an exercise that helped me. I used that exercise to move up to the "Women In Love" tapping intro but I still have a hard time getting the notes to sound good with that one.

I also agree with Mikey. Try to tap the note quickly.

I always think that too...but whenever I see some kid putting his videos on YouTube it just makes me think...WHAT?...You just want other people to say your good too...will that make you feel better? Who cares?

I really don't understand what a person's motivation would be to post a video of themselves playing guitar...other than...to be a big-headed loser and try and SHOW OFF how good they are....however the guys that do lessons and actually run thru the song with you...I love that....

On my Wolfgang Standard I feel like I need to tap kind of harder or at least more direct on the higher strings....but that's just me.......

LOL! I hear ya. I used to think I was pretty good until the internet came along. Now, not so much. The only audience I would ever play for is my dog...he doesn't seem to mind my playing...and that might be only because I'm the one that feeds him. It's still fun though, so what the hell, it beats playing fucking golf or texas hold em.

Remember this Harmonics sound good at some frets and are near impossible at others. So it takes patience to figure out how each fret reacts. Tapping occurs just north of the fret. Harmonics occur diresctly on the fret.

I kind of think of it as "bouncing" my finger off of the string: light enough so that you don't actually fret/kill the note - hard enough so that the harmonic rings out. Like anything, it just takes practice. Good luck.
