Default What if "Diver Down" was never released??!!

I gave "Diver Down" a listen today.......the first in a long long time, and it made me think about something.
I think its the weakest of the Roth era, not just cause of the cover tunes, but it sounds flat too, and has no gloss like "1984".
It just makes me wonder what could've happened if Eddie had the upper hand more in 82/83 and decided to scrap "Diver Down" and save the orginal stuff for "1984".
Ok. It would've given VH a 2 and a half year break, but looking back I dont think it would've done the band much harm.
I reckon Dave could've released his "Crazy from the heat" album in 83 with the "Diver Down" covers on it, then VH would come back in late 83 with a 11 track "1984" with no covers in sight.

    Heres my listing:

    1. 1984
    2. Jump
    3. Panama
    4. Hang 'em high
    5. Top Jimmy
    6. Little Guitars
    7. Secrets
    8. Drop Dead legs
    9. Hot for teacher
    10.I'll wait
    11.Girl Gone bad
    12.House of Pain

    Ok, theres 12 songs!!!
What is understood need not be discussed

"Dont disturb my paradise. I've asked you once. I've asked you nice" - "SERIOUS JU JU"

"I am in a blissful state. Dont bug me!!!" - Richard Dreyfuss "The Goodbye girl" 1977

there's nothing wrong with the cover tune album. it is what it is. pretty woman is fun for eddie to play. plus we never would have had intruder as it came together back then.

I just don't know why they didn't put Big Trouble on there. savy?
If eddie were down and out on a sidewalk playing guitar I'd be next to him with a bottle and a blanky braving the cold. I would be sucking my thumb happily making chupa chupa noises in sync with the petroglyphic sounds that came from the mighty finger tips of Edward Van Halen.

Without Diver Down.....we wouldn't have "Happy Trails".

The world would be a darker place.

To me, there are too many great original tracks on DD for me to say it's an awful album.

    Wow no mention of Intruder?

I think there's a few gems in the few original tunes on this one.

Intruder is the most incredible, melodic pop Van Halen song ever written.

Well I wouldn't call it pop but it's definitely a nice segue into Pretty Woman.

Gotta keep in mind that 1984 was recorded in the days when they were recording on tape for vinyl. I heard Dave say on his radio show that one of the reasons that VH albums were sometimes shorter (and he quoted 1984 as an example) is that there is only so much BASS you can fit on a vinyl album. The more bass or thump, the less room for songs. So based on that, I would guess that you wouldnt get the 12 songs on the vinyl album and/or it would have to be remixed to rip some bottom end out.
