Steve Vai guitar lesson with Eddie mention...

I thought this was cool...Steve Vai recently did a guitar class in England and someone asked him about techniques for developing speed. During his answer he started talking about tone and how Eddie played his guitar through his rig and still sounded like Eddie. Pretty cool.

Steve mentions Ed again in Part 1 of that series... near the end he credits Ed for re-inventing the instrument. The whole series is a great listen if you are a Vai fan. Thanks for the link!

Steve is a classy guy, but of course he has to give credit to Ed. Imagine the evolution of rock guitar without Eddie.

Vai said "Edward Van Halen came in, because we were friends". In what Universe was Ed friends with Steve Vai? When did this happen?

I'm imagining he was talking about after he was in the DLR Band because he said "my studio". I've never heard Ed mention Steve Vai before. In fact, I remember one interview around '98 where the interviewer asked him what he thought about players like Vai and Satch, to which Ed replied "I don't listen to those guys", or something like that.

Unless this happened before Dave left VH... I read an interview with Dweezil Zappa once that implied that Ed jammed with Dweezil and Vai when he was young at Frank's house, but I assumed it was only once for a minute and that it never blossomed into the friendship that Vai is implying in that clip. Weird.

i think it was an interview for the release of balance and the question was something along the lines of 'has the rise of vai and satch in the last decade made you sweat?'. I'll try to find they actual interview later.

Eddie was friends with Frank Zappa and Vai since i'd say about '79 or 80'.

Dude, wrong. I heard Vai actually asked EVH's permission before joining DLR's band - he didn't want to burn any bridges. To which Ed replied: "as long as you're only in ONE band."

I've also heard of EVH inviting Satch to his studio. All these cats are friends.

You know as much as I don't care for his style of playing....he really seems like a down to earth guy...it has nothing to do with the props he throws to Eddie for me...he just sounds like a well grounded individual...classy guy
