    Default Question for Dave

Sorry if this is old, but...
    Two questions:
    1. Has anyone ever pointedly asked Dave if he regrets leaving Van Halen?
    2. Has Dave ever pointedly answered the question?
I'm actually quite curious... just thinking about how different the last 23 years might have been.
(loving sammy and dave equally here... just curious)

I believe Dave totally had an inflated ego in 1984 (and still has - although maybe he's a bit more humble today) but knowing how Ed can be, I don't blame Dave 100% for leaving. I think he may have been just as sick of Ed as Ed was sick of him.

This is a joke, right? I asked Dave while i was front row at the E.E.A.S tour, but he didn't pointedly answer me !

I'm sure he been asked more than he cares to remember.... He has answered it probably more times than he cares to remember as well.

That's about right. Those I know who ever met Dave said he gave entertaining and amusing responses to questions and comments--but he never actually answered a question with an understandable statement.

Like all people, these guys have lived with their decisions for better or worse. "Regret" is a terribly pessimistic term, and I think most people who recognize that use the word carefully and sparingly.

i'm sure dave regrets it to a degree, and i'm sure he'll never admit it...

dave was also riding high off of the success of the ep, which was in theory a one-off at the time... it probably got him thinking that he could just do it himself and didn't need ed or the band...

but in dave's defense, even before ed's breakdowns with substance abuse, be it alcohol or drugs, i think ed more than proved that he was difficult to get along with when sammy exited the first time around, and more than reinforced when gary was out abruptly, too (although more amicably)... ed's a control freak, and he's protecting his craft to a certain extent, but in the world of rock bands there has to be room for compromise...

Didnt Dave say something regarding his leaving the band along the lines of Eddie not getting out of bed for days at a time and nobody in the band wanted to do anything regarding new music?

For those of us who actually listened to Dave's radio show, he did a segment on how well he can take a question and completely change the subject to whatever HE wants to talk about. I love interviews with Dave, at the very least it's always entertaining.

He said that he waited for the band to get thier act together and that Ed didnt get out of bed for 4 days.

i just finished reading the new VH book and DLR was definitly the jerkoff in 1984.

Looking at the bands history, to lay all the blame of the 1985 breakup solely at Dave's feet is probably inaccurate. You had two guys with huge egos and drug addictions battling for control of the band, not a recipe for a Walton's episode of togetherness.

Almost all the big bands have had some form of falling out between the lead singer and the lead guitarist. Page and Plant didn't talk to each other for a little while, Jagger and Keith, Perry and Schon, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, the list could go on and on.

Unfortunately for VH, most of them didn't take 22 years to get over it and move on like Dave and Ed did.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

    Good responses.
I love Dave's entertaining banter... but I'd love to know what he really thinks.
It's a tough topic though, because I love what Sammy was able to accomplish with the band as well.
It is what it is, I guess...
